Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Review by Sagami

"Amazingly funny and playable"

This is one of the most amusing games ever created. You play a character named Abe. Abe is a member of the Mudokon race, a race enslaved by the evil Glukkons. Anyway, Abe is doing clean-up work one night, and looks at the products made by Rupture Farms, Abe's "workplace". He discovers that Mudokons are going to be the next food item! So, Abe escapes and has to save 99 of his other friends from the Rupture Farms facility.

As you play the game, you realize this is one giant action/strategy game. Having to run around and do a series of objectives is very taxing in many of the situations, but it really makes you think about your situation. Also, the game branches off and you're not just contained in Rupture Farms. You explore other areas of the world, places like Scrabmania and whatnot. Being one of the most innovative games to date, this game will interest most people and leave the rest absolutely confused.

GRAPHICS: 9/10 These graphics are decent. Abe looks like a freak (but that's normal), and the rest of the Oddworld group isn't exactly the most attractive bunch either. However, they're well drawn and designed ugly people. ^_- However, the graphics get really good when the FMVs show up. A nice long intro helps explain what the point of the game is, and gives a look into what the world is all about.

SOUND: 7/10 Probably the game's weakest point, albeit still good. The music is in the background, and it's kind of quiet, but it gives that strange element of eerieness. The sound effects, however, are very funny. From Abe's flatulence to his sheepish "Oops" when he accidentally ices one of his own to his hilarious voice in the FMVs, the SFX are simply wonderful and perfect.

GAMEPLAY: 8/10 The controls are a bit jerky at first, but you get used to it really quick. Also, the game is so fun that you won't notice that you are going in one giant circle by the time you finish the game. This game will have you playing for a long time, for you have infinite lives, one of the best features of the game, and it's really interesting to watch how many ways you could die. Heh. Also, it's a challenge to try and save every single Mudokon, something which I can't accomplish. You'll have a blast.

PLOT: 10/10 What can I say? You get to save about 100 lives while trying not to become a popsicle. You also find out that you have a destiny, which follows over into the next game. The ending, which I will not say, can be one of two, depending on how you do. One is obviously better than the other, so don't mess up, ya bastich! (in-joke!)

REPLAY VALUE: 9/10 This game is one you will want to play over and over until you rescue all the Mudokons, find all the secrets, get to the end of the game, or see every way to die in the game. Either way, the game will have good replay value until you find everything in the game. Then, you may turn it over to someone else, but the true fan will always play the game just because. Also, if you beat the game with all 99 Mudokons saved, you learn how to access special features!

BUY/RENT: If you've played the game before, you can beat it in five days if you're good. Otherwise, buy the game. It's fun, and not that expensive.

OVERALL: 9/10 With only a few problems, Oddworld has become an instant classic, and it doesn't involve shooting everything. However, if you control a Slig... ^_- Anyway, this is a game for those who like to take time to play their games, and not slog through in 30 minutes.
