Review by The Great Db

"Gold in the Arcade, would have been gold on SNES, but on Playstation? No."

I don't like giving bad reviews. If I don't like the game, I usually don't review it. But since this game seems to be popping up everywhere, I should spread the word. This game is best left in the arcade, or if they had made it a couple years ago for the Genesis or SNES, it should've been left there. Unfortunately, it's not, so let's get started.

This is one of the better platform kill-'ems in the arcade world. Even a big pessimist of this game like me has to admit that this game is incredibly addictive. It has some classic platformer controls, because let's face it, that's what it is. But I just can't stand to see this game for the PSX.

This game has some shoddy sound and crappy graphics. This is one of those games with old-style platform graphics. It is in 2d, from the side angle. The graphics look straight from 1993. The sound really isn't existent, because all you hear is the bloody screams and explosions of your enemies. The BMG and sound effects are better than the graphics, but still, they are a little, okay, a lot, outdated.

All you old genesis faithfuls will really be familiar with this type of game. It is a shame you weren't familiar with this game earlier. In other words, this would be a pretty good game for the Genesis. It just doesn't live up to the high standard that games like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VIII have set for us. Not even close. In fact, if this game was exactly the same, just for genesis, this game wouldn't even have good graphics by their standards. Don't say I have been spoiled by these new awesome graphics, I just saying some of these games shouldn't ruin the PSX for us.

The gameplay isn't bad. You have three buttons to use. Jump, shoot, throw grenades. There is no switching weapons, because, well, in this game a weapon's usefulness is measuring in one element. Pure power. However, the saving factor is the incredible addictiveness. This game will easily take up 2-3 hours of your life. After that, it's a different story, but those 2-3 hours seem like 15 minutes.
All in all, this category almost, almost makes up for it, but not quite. Again, this is a good game in the arcade, and would have been a good 16-bit console game, but the Playstation jumping bar is just too high.

To buy or to rent? The third option, play this game in the arcade. Or maybe the fourth, which is avoid this game like the plague. Either one, it's all good. This game actually might be a halfway decent one night rental, but after that you start to see this game for what it is. It can be addictive for a couple of hours, but that is the extent of it's fun. Like this game? Go dust off your Genesis. There is a ton of good games like this, except there they won't be out of place.

This game is straight out of the past. Except for the fact that this game choose to come around 7 years too late. Seriously, when I think of my Genesis, I think of three things. Sonic, old sports games, and this type of you good-they bad-you have assault rifle-they fight with fist-one of you-50 of them-bring it on games. See this game in the arcade, and remember that that arcade game has my endorsement. See this game for the Playstation, please, do me a favor and spit.
