"An eye pleasing shooter"

Have you played the original R-Type before? If you have and you LOVE the R-Type gameplay, then you should definitely get R-Type Delta. If you have never played R-Type before but you are a shooter fan, go and try R-Type Delta anyway.

R-Type Delta is a 32-bit sequel to R-Type. You have all the original gameplay, plus a lot more. This time you can play as 1 of 3 ships, and each ship has different weapons. Also different to the original R-Type is after you kill a certain amount of enemies, your shield become 100% and you can launch a huge (graphically impressive) bomb that kill all the enemies on the screen.

Gameplay (8.0)
The game is pretty fun because all the weapons have different properties, and there are a lot of enemies to blast. You can adjust the difficulties, but even the normal mode is reasonably hard (that is, you won't beat a level in your first try without dying once). The level design is not too creative since most of them are analogy to R-Type. For example, you blast a lot of alien creatures in level two, and you fight a huge battleship in level three. But it is still fun nevertheless.

Controls (8.0)
Control is pretty good, it supports dual shock and the ship is pretty responsive. Not much I can say here.

Graphic (10)
In my opinion a great shooter has to have great graphic, and this is why R-Type is better than other shooters that I've played. The graphic is super awesome, each type of weapon is a pleasure to look at, and the ways your enemies explode (aliens and spaceships) is very fun to watch.

Sound (10)
Another key ingredient for a great shooter. Great music and special sound effects.

Replayability (6.0)
Like most shooters, you probably won't want to beat this game more than 2 times. But the possibility of playing 3 different ships help a lot in this department.

Buy or not?
Well, in my opinion this game is the best shooter in PSX. Better than G. Darius, better than Einhander, and better than Strikers 1942 II. If you want to buy a great game in the shooter category, you should probably buy this game. If you are just a casual gamer looking for a great game, you should probably get FF 8 or Metal Gear Integral instead (but remember to rent R-Type Delta!!!)
