Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
Review by Martijn Buisman
"This is a very, very, very, very good game!"
As some of you may know, AITD is the game, which created the survival-horror genre. Resident Evil made the genre famous and Capcom was king of the genre for a very long time. But now it's got competition from Silent Hill and, after 7 years, the new nightmare of Alone in the Dark.
Story. 9/10.
The story is good. You play either Edward Carnby (his forefather was the hero in the previous AITD games) or Aline Cedrac. The story takes place on Shadow Island, where Charles Fiske, Carnby's best friend, was murdered. Carnby goes to the island to investigate the murder and Aline goes with him for investigation on old Indian tablets.
Then, the new nightmare begins...
Gameplay. 10/10.
The gameplay is pretty much the same as the gameplay of RE and SH. AITD has a very good control system and if you get used to it, you'll find AITD a game which is very easy to play.
Graphics. 10/10.
These graphics are the best graphics ever seen on psx. Darkworks did a very good job on this one. The backgrounds are of PS2 caliber. The FMV's are also very beautiful.
Sounds. 10/10.
The SFX sounds are extremely good. The sound of the footsteps are very realistic. If you see your character from far away, the footsteps will be less good to hear. If you are outside you can hear the wind, which gives the game a very creepy atmosphere.
The music in this game is just as good as the music from RE and SH. The music is different, depending on what kind of situation you're in. Very good!
Lightning. 10/10.
This game is often pretty dark. So I suggest you play the game in a dark room.
In some rooms of the game, you can turn the light on and off. You can also turn your flashlight on and off. The game gives very beautiful shadow and light effects, depending on the lights that are on and the movements you make with your flashlight.
Difficulty. 10/10.
The game is pretty difficult to beat. The monsters are quite strong and the puzzles are very, very hard. There's enough ammo in the game, but be careful with wasting it, 'cause if you're out of ammo, you'll die very quickly.
Replayability. 4/10.
It's pretty useless to play this game for a second time. It could be fun, but that's it. There are no mini-games, no different endings (like in RE 1, RE 3: N, SH 1 and SH 2) and you can't save if you have beaten the game (which is also a weak point of RE: Code: Veronica X). This is the only bad point of AITD: TNN.
Overall. 10/10.
Everything is good about this game, except the replayability (but that doesn't count strong, 'cause it has not much to do with the game itself). If you are a survival-horror fan, like me, I suggest you buy this game very quick.
I'm now waiting for the sequel. As at the end of the credits, after you have beaten the game, stands:
Carnby will return...
