Dance Dance Revolution Konamix
Review by Ninjapluto
"Just another great DDR"
Dance Dance Revolution Konamix (Now being called Konamix for the rest of this review.) was pretty much like all the other DDR games, step here, stomp there. pretty basic. not too exciting, just like all the other DDR's for the PSX right? WRONG! Its not like the other version of DDR, the game engine has been changed a little (the arrows look neater than in first mix) but not much of a difference. But they look snazzy now! Konami has included a couple new songs in Konamix, like Can't Stop falling in love, B4U, and a revamped version of Afranova, which is called afranova prime evil, which, by looking at the name, sounds hard, but is alot easier than the original. Okay! Now on too the rest of my review!
Gameplay:
The Gameplay in Konamix hasn't been changed much from the gameplay in the other DDR series. In Konamix there are 6 different modes to play, Game mode, Solo Mode, Workout mode, Training mode, Lesson Mode and Edit mode.
On game mode, you can go head to head with your friends, or play by yourself. Solo Mode is like playing game mode by yourself. Workout mode is a fun way to exercise without have the restrictions to actually get a passing grade on any songs (i.e. a D is the lowest pass). In exercise mode you get to play each song, and you don't even half to pass it to move onto the next one. This is a great way to practice songs without getting frustrated. Lesson Mode shows you step by step instructions for playing the game, giving first time players tips and suggestions. Practice Mode is a mix between Lesson and Exercise modes. It lets you explore the different songs in the game, and you get to try them out without the pressure of having to pass it. And Edit mode lets you make your own steps to a song, which is a new and fun feature to Konamix. The Game is pretty straight foreword; you have to get A's on songs to unlock new songs, with 20 songs to unlock. The game is alot of fun with many difficulty challenges, songs range from being an okay speed and difficulty for those first starting out, to extremely hard for those expert players. Either way you look at it, the game is alot of fun. The only problem is that it is the same game engine that has been used in the previous versions, so there is really nothing new in that.
Replay
There is so much replay in this game, I can barely contain myself! There is so much to do in this game; it doesn't ever get boring. You have to get an A on every song to unlock more songs, which gets harder and harder to do, because of songs like Afranova Prime evil. Some people may find the game slightly annoying at times because you have to get an A on songs to unlock the next one, but the replay is there, you know it. I know it. The game is always fun to play and is great for when you have people come over for a party or something, this game is great for parties or having friends over.
To buy, rent or leave it on the shelf?
If you have played the previous DDR's, you will like this one, Konami has put in some classics songs from previous version (i.e. Drop the bomb from the first DDR game) and old vets will love the remixes to the old songs. If you like dance, house, techno etc. genres of music, I would advise you pick this game up aswell, as it has a great sound track and a variety of music. If you just want to see what it is like, rent it, and if you like it, buy the game and a pad.
If you dancing, Techno/house/dance music doesn't float your boat, then I would just leave this on the shelf, and if you don't like that music, but still want a game like this, get Parappa the Rapper.
So all in all, Dance Dance Revolution is a great game and you should pick it up if you like it.
