Doom
Review by JC DentonDX
"Doom is Back!"
When Doom was out on PC, it was winning awards for it's engine, graphics, and sound. It was estimated that over 10 million people have played Doom fluently. Doom was truly magnificient. Unfortuneatly, these award-winning graphics and sound are nothing compared to the FPS of today. But, Doom was the grandfather of FPS as we know it. Doom set new grounds for what a video game has to be. Now, when we look at doom, we think of it as being a timeless classic.
The playstation version of Doom has 3 different games in it. It has levels from Doom, Doom II, and Ultimate Doom. It has over 50 hellish levels. All of your favorite monsters are still alive and well, waiting to get fragged. All of the original secrets in the games are still there, along with some additions. You can see how much of the level you have completed after you have done so. It will tell you what percent of the monsters you killed, what percent o the items you got, and what percent of the secrets you have found. Even if you do beat it, it's still a challenge to find everything. It has an all-new cheat mode that allows you to have all weapons, full life, warping to levels and much more. Now, using some weapons too close to a wall can kill you, long falls make you die, and there are even more enemies to give you more of a challenge.
Although still not the best hardware first person shooter on PSX, there have been some improvements. The game is super-fast, at over 30 frames a second. It has improved 24-channel sound, and some cool lighting effects. It is now 2 players, where you and your friend can play co-operative, and you can even use a link cable to hook it up to 2 TVs. The controls are just plain perfect. The PS controller fits the controls for DOOM almost PERFECTLY. You use L1 and R1 to strafe, and move with the digital control, and shoot with Triangle. Perfect. This game was wonderfully made, and deserves to be remembered. That's why you should go and buy it, for only 10 dollars!
All around, the new Doom on PSX is a great buy, and is a steal right now. You can easily find it for 10 dollars. I know if I can love Doom, you can love it, too.
