Chocobo's Dungeon 2
Review by Lady Celes
"Chocobos, Moogles, White mages oh my!"
This game in no way, is a squaresoft masterpiece. It is however a good game. The story lacks a little bit, and the gameplay isn't stellar, but the game itself, is good. This game is also fun. Square provides us with yet another good game.
Gameplay: 9/10
Fairly original, and a turn from the traditional feel of squaresoft games, the gameplay is great in this game. First of all, the main point at the beginning is to explore the dungeons. To explore the dungeon, you, and your trusty partner must walk around, finding paths to go deeper into the dungeon. Sounds like a simple concept, but it's much more complicated than one thinks. Each time you go into a dungeon, the dungeon changes. The battle system isn't too complicated, and the way you travel around isn't either. That makes this game, worthy of a 9 in the gameplay category!
Graphics: 8/10
The graphics in this game, are good. They look good enough for a playstation game anyways. Without the fancy realism of other square games, like Final fantasy 8, this game may look a little cutesy. The graphics, as cutesy as they may be, are good. The main character, the chocobo, looks wonderful, even though it is a turn from the traditional chocobo style used in Final Fantasy 6 and beyond. The characters in this game look semi-3 dimensional, and bring out the best in the game.
Story:: 6/10
Not a great story, nor a bad one. At start, it's just Mog and a Chocobo who want to find treasure. But as the story progresses, more things come to light. Not a whole lot of story in the game, but enough to keep you going. Story in games like this don't matter as much as ''true'' Rpg's. The simple storyline makes it easy to follow, and the originality increases a score. While the story isn't worthy of a Pulitzer prize, it is worthy of a 6 from this reviewer!
Challenge: 7/10
Chocobos dungeon 2, is not an impossible game. It will not frustrate you beyond belief at any point in the game. The enemies are pretty easy, and the dungeons aren't hard to explore. The game isn't as simple as one would think. Sure, once your down on level 4 of the dungeon, and your down on health, you can return to the top, and not have to explore, right? Wrong. You have to explore, because the dungeon enters you at a different starting point each time. This allows for extra exploration, and increases the difficulty of the game
Music: 7/10
The music isn't the greatest a game has ever had, but it's good enough. The music in the game can't really follow the plot, but does so well enough to keep one in the game. The music isn't really suspenseful, but it works well enough. The music tends to have a theme however, making the music, not just an added extra.
Replay: 6/10
In Replay, this game lacks a little. The game doesn't appeal enough the first time through, to make you want to play it again. It does have enough power to make you play it once, but twice is another story. The game is fun, but in the end, it's not much more. You can always get more treasure the second time through, find some stuff you missed however. Therefore, that game can make you play it again, just not often.
Overall: 7/10
This game is a fairly good game, with a few minor flaws. People tend to overlook lowly square games like this, however, they should not. This is a good game, that has a lot of potential. So long as people continue to pass this up, it will lose potential of being a great game.
