Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi
Review by Baradur
"A Bad Star Wars Game? Well, There's A First Time For Everything"
Masters of Teras Kasi was the first actual Star Wars themed fighting game. This horrible excuse for a Star Wars title came out for the Playstation several years ago, and even back then, I still didn't think it was all that great. I still find it hard to believe that Lucas Arts could mess up so badly on a game like this, I mean, all their other games were great. Here's why Masters of Teras Kasi was so disappointing...
Gameplay 2/10: Ugh, the gameplay is about as pleasing as seeing Jar Jar Binks running around like the idiot he is. Well, this is a fighting game, where the only objective is to mercilessly beat the crap out of your opponent until he or she dies a horrible death. Everything in the gameplay was pretty awful. First of all, the attacks were too slow. by the time you got around to actually hitting your opponent, you would have a good fraction of your life energy gone. Also, the characters couldn't really dodge attacks very well, they were just too slow and bulky. It was also kind of annoying that some of the characters wouldn't always use their weapons. Come on, Han Solo! You're carrying a GUN, why don't you just SHOOT Fett with it instead of trying to beat over the head with it? Aside from the idiotic one player mode, there's only one extra feature: multiplayer, which really isn't that much different from one player.
Challenge 10/10: Frustratingly hard. This game makes me mad every time I play it because it's just too damn difficult! Of course, I'm talking about hard(Jedi) mode. Standard mode is far less challenging, but still a tad difficult.
Story 3/10: Masters of Teras Kasi doesn't really have much of a story, but here it goes: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was a person named Arden Lyn, who had be in suspended animation for thousands of years, only to be woken up by Imperial forces. Emperor Palpatine made her one of his servants, and for a very peculiar reason, went out to kill Luke Skywalker. That's about it really.
Graphics 8/10: For an old Playstation game, these graphics aren't that bad. The character designs are pretty nice, especially Boba Fett and his Mandalorian armor. The fight arenas look pretty nice as well. Cloud City's carbon freezing chamber has a sinister look to it with the dark lighting, and the various flashes of dark red appearing everywhere. At least Lucas Arts knew what they were doing on the graphics.
Sound 9/10: Lucas Arts and Sony have a knack for giving their games excellent audio features. I'm quite sure that had this game been released for the Nintendo 64, the sound would have been terrible, because of the cartridge. Not on the CD playing Playstation. There's that classic Star Wars music blasting away in the background with near perfect frequency, along with the various character noises.
Playtime/Replayability 1/10: I eventually got so frustrated with this game that I didn't finish it. Unless you're a huge fan of fighting games, you'll probably get bored of this game fast. As for replayability, if you actually managed to make it all the way through the game, then you must really be interested in the game, and want to play it again.
Rent or Buy? Don't buy this game, it's simply not worth the money. If you're a big Star Wars fan like me though, then Masters of Teras Kasi is at least worth one rental.
Well, aside from the graphics and sound, I guess there's nothing all that great about this game(like the X-Box, in my opinion). Wait, there is ONE redeeming quality of this terrible title: No Jar Jar.
