Doom
Review by peach freak
"Doom has its magic work....again"
PSX Doom includes both Ultimate Doom and Doom II in it, and at a really great price too! Many of the levels have been copied from their original PC versions and it is still quite fun. With near 60 fun levels, this game is one of the best Doom ports out there.
Story
Ultimate Doom
Well, there has been a Demon invasion at Phobos and Deimos, the two moons orbiting Mars while you were away and alone. At that time, the Demons broke through the gates and everything gone berserk. Deimos simply vanished into the air and you decided to go to see what's happening. Since all of the marines are dead, they had all the weapons, leaving you with only a pistol and your knuckles. It is up to you to stop the Demon invasion from going anywhere.
Doom II
After that nice little hell outbreak in Mars, the demons were able to get into the Earth. Many of the people there are held hostage and now it is up to you to stop the demons from taking over the Earth. You are their only hope as all of your buddies are still dead. Once again, all you have is your pistol.
Graphics: 9/10
Compared to the computer versions of both games, the graphics look totally awesome. Everything looks a lot better and tons of stuff has been edited. Now, there have been more dark areas in the Playstation version of this game, so that's the only con to the graphics. Also, the glowing looks really cool in some rooms and the lights that shine around items look cool also. Most weapons look realistic like the Shotgun and Rocket Launcher, and enemies look awesome too. They were so creepy they scared me to death when I was a little kid. These graphics are a huge step up from the PC version.
Gameplay: 10/10
Here's the best part of the game: the gameplay. Like I said in the beginning of the review, there are a total of 59 levels in this game. Ultimate Doom and Doom II have been ported onto one CD, and only a few of the levels are missing. Other levels are just edited and look a lot different. You go around all the levels, shooting monsters, solving puzzles, hitting switches, which is really fun, especially when you have a lot of levels to go around, so expect a lot of fun, and the best part is taking down and fighting the monsters, and some puzzles are fun to solve. Can't believe how great and fun this game got after playing the first few levels. But they're only 1 really small bad thing about the gameplay is that you can't save your games on a memory card. Instead, you save on passwords so you can write them down for later use, and you'll be right where you are. But that is not enough to hurt the gameplay one bit.
Sound Effects: 9/10
The sound effects are a lot better in these games to the PC version. Weapon sounds sound more realistic and some of them are really great, such as the Super Shotgun reloading or your Pistol. Also, the enemies are a LOT more scarier sound wise. For example, when the Cyberdemon walks, its metal foot makes a sound, and gets louder as it comes closer to you. This scared the nightmares out of me when I was a kid and I did have nightmares about Doom sleeping. Other sounds are scary too, as enemies will make creepy sounds when walking around, and it can be really scary if you don't know where they're coming from and low on health. And if you start having bad dreams because of the sound effects, don't say I didn't warn you.
Music: 7/10
The only thing brought down in this game from the PC versions of Doom and Doom II. Instead of those awesome MIDIs from levels like E1M1 and E1M9, they've been replaced by atmospheric and mood music, which may be tricky to hear. But since this game is scary, the good part about this music is that it can be scary as well. Unless your TV volume is high, the music is quite hard to hear however, as it is pretty quiet as well.
Replayability: 8/10
Replaying this game can be pretty fun. After you beat Ultimate Doom, Doom II, or both, you can still play either game again. You can play them to become a better player, find more secrets, play at a higher difficulty, look for the secret exits if you didn't find them, or to just have fun with this game. Doom is one of the most addicting games I've ever played.
Rent or Buy?
Go out and buy this game, you'll really love it. Plus this is a really addicting game, and this is a two Doom games on one CD, with near 60 levels, and you can find it at a low price too. You can find it from anywhere from 10 to 15 dollars at a low price, and if you can't find it, buying Doom Collector's Edition at Wal Mart for the PC for 10 dollars is another option. But of course, I got this in the mail for free from one of my friend's friend.
Overall: 10/10
This is probably the second best Doom port out there to the GameBoy Advance version of Doom II. Almost 100% of everything is ported, the graphics and sound effects are a huge improvement, the gameplay is still the fun classic self, the music has been completely changed, and it is really worth playing again.
