Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Ai Oboete Imasu ka

Review by Da_Shocker

"Hmmm if the game was nearly as entertaining as the manual."

That's right the manual is more entertaining than the game. What a shame. Now it's time to disscuss the game.

Graphics: 5
This is the Sega Saturn were talking about the 2D powerhouse unfortunately the developers must've used some code from the Super Famicom or the PC Engine as this game hardly looks better than than either of the best efforts on those systems. The game looks average at best. With static backgrounds and hardly any parallax. The only redeeming quality about the graphics are the surprisingly crisp video clips in the game which come alot closer to PSX quality than any Saturn game i've seen of course it's letterboxed.

Sound: 8
The best part of the game is the sound. The music is a bit different because it is based off of Macross: Do you remember love? Which was called Clash of the Bionoids in the states. Not the Robotech we all know and love. The only bad thing about the sound is the complete lack of a sound test. I guess they just want you to buy the soundtrack.

Gameplay: 2
This is were the game takes a major hit. The game is pretty boring and easy. There is nothing innovative about this game other than changing modes. And even that's not a good as it should be. There really isn't any reason to play as the fighter of battroid. The fighter takes to much damage and the battroid is to slow. And forget about doing anything acrobatic with the battroid as it can only jump and float. The weapon selection is somewhat sparse but that's becaue of the Macross roots more than anything else. There are several things that really piss me off with this game. #1 Where's the 2 player mode. Virtually every shooter has a 2 player mode but not this one. #2 Lack of manuerveribility. Seeing as the enemy can jump planes freely and you can't i very frustrating. #3 Too much on screen at times. The only time you'll get killed is when there hundreds of missiles on screen and you can't see because of the missile trails. #4 Everything is too predictable. The enemys run the same pattern over and over. And last but not least the longevity. This game we'll tak you 2 hours to beat on normal and 10 extra minutes on hard. Plus you have ulimited continues. Hardly worth the 50 bucks or so. You'd be better off watching the video that playing this game.

Final say:
If your a huge Macross fan get this game for the manual and the cinemas. If your looking for a good shooter look elsewhere. Other than the Macross lisence there's nothing speacial about this game.
