Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition
Review by Captain Doormat
"Is this game worth it just for a few more tracks? Yes."
The normal arcade version of Daytona USA was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1995. Although the first Daytona captured the fun and excitement of the Arcade version, it did have a few flaws. And Daytona USA: CCE solves some of these flaws, although changing some of the original Daytona USA elements in the process.
Graphics:8/10
The Daytona USA graphics are back, and better than ever. The textures and advertisements on the cars are great, the track are detailed, and the whole thing moves at 30fps with no slowdown.
In fact, this version's graphics are much much MUCH better than expected. For us Europeans, the big PAL borders are gone, completely gone! Full screen bliss.
The only flaws are that there is an unhealthy amount of pop up-less than the first, but it's still there. This really isn't an issue, it doesn't make the game any less enjoyable, and many Saturn games of this time feature this amount of pop up.
This isn't exactly a flaw, but it may upset some people. The cars in the game are more rounded, and the wheels don't poke out anymore, unlike the first Daytona.
Sound:9/10
Wow. The sound in this game is near perfect. Away with that terrible bloke who sang, in with remixed track music! Yes! The new music is exactly the same note-wise, but that god awful bloke is gone, leaving some great tracks, that I don't think anyone will forget for the rest of their gaming life.
The sound effects are as good as ever, the bangs, clunks, the car radio, everything sound as good as the first, if not better. The sounds and music never get annoying or repetitive, unlike several games on other consoles.
Gameplay:9/10
The classic, fun, arcade style Daytona racing that we all know and love still remains. You race up to 40 opponents around the 3 classic tracks, and a few new ones, which is the whole point of this game.
The thing about Daytona is that it really is just so easy to pick up and play, and is great fun, too. The new tracks are well designed, and are still better than many modern day tracks.
And this game has something I didn't expect-a choice of cars. Each car has varying attributes, and everyone will have their own personal favorites.
All the fun parts of Daytona are there, so you can have some fun in two player. Smash into a wall and you'll fly up into the air and land back on all four wheels. Gaming brilliance.
Overall:8/10
Absolutely fantastic. Get this if you have a Saturn. And if you don't have a Saturn, get one. With this.
