Review by Captain Doormat
"Perfect."
Bomberman is a very simple game. You take the role of a little bloke, named 'Bomberman'. You waddle around, dumping bombs, and using their explosions to your advantage. If the explosion hits an enemy, they will die, or at least get harmed. You use power ups to increase your walking speed, the number of bombs you can lay at once, their firepower, etc.
Graphics:8/10
The graphics aren't really anything to shout about, but they are damn fine. Clear, sharp, bold and colourful. Everything is large, so you never have trouble seeing anything, and all symbols are easy to identify.
The game moves at a lovely rate, has no slowdown, etc. All the sprites are immensly detailed. Shame all 2D games don't look this good.
The menus are very easily navigated, the text is clear, and it is always obvious what you have to do.
Sound:7/10
Again, really nothing you'd want to buy on CD, but at least it is decent to a certain degree. The level music sounds just right, and the battle music is frantic, for the fast paced action. It's not toe tapping stuff, but it does the job.
The sound effects are great, too, they are clear. They sound just like you would expect, and the voices are clear and crisp, with no muffling or fuzzing.
Gameplay:100/10
This is perfect. Single player isn't actually single player, more of a mode where single player is an option, oher people can play, too!! This makes it very fun, co operating in games is just as fun as thrashing each other. You have to destroy all of the red enemy things on a level-sounds easy, bt you have to get to them first, which usually means some basic puzzle solving and/or battling through baddies.
All good so far- the game is just really fun to play or watch. The characters are full of personality, which does help with the game immensly.
The real part of Bomberman is the multiplayer. Here, you have to bomb to blow each other up. Sounds easy, it isn't when you can have up to about 14 human players!! You can use two multitaps, and you can even have a widescreen arena!!
You can get dinosaurs, which act as an extra chance. Get these from destroying a block, like you would any normal item. Each colour does something different. Get another egg and you'll power up your dinosaur. This works really well and gives some added variety.
Challenge and Controls:10/10
The one player mode is abseloutly brilliant, it gets very hard. The controls are perfect-d-pad is move, and buttons are lay bombs.
Overall:10/10
An amazing game that you MUST play.
