Burning Rangers
Review by Ockman
"Sonic Team has outdone it's self with this game."
I didn't get this game till recently, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I had only played other sonic team games, and I had read as much as I could on the internet, but never found out enough to really give an understanding of what the gameplay is like. Then I discovered what the game was like when I bought for myself. I can sum up the game to me in one word. Unique! Truly unique.
Burning rangers is a game about firefighters. An idea unique in it's self. However, it goes even further than that. Futuristic fire fighters, that battle blazing flames in amazing 3D worlds, with a sort of laser gun that turns flames into crystal. Which in turn are used for power, and the use of the transporter which transport poor civilians to safety. You don't just fight the flames though, there's plenty of fun and action, and you have to do what a fire fighter must.
The anime sequence in the opening is really cool, as I myself am a big fan of anime. I was definitely happy when I saw this. The theme song alone makes the game with buying! It's quite catchy! =)
Graphics 10/10:
Granted, compared to today's standards, Burning rangers wouldn't normally get a 10 out of 10, however for the time, this game I think this game is better than any that came out. This game as good of quality as an early version of phantasy star online, which is also a sonic team game. The colors, and environments are just amazing. Obviously, to today's standards, the pixels are hard to stand. Like I said though, at the time, hardly any game could compare to it.
Sound 11/10:
This is one of the game's strongest points! There is no distracting music during the game, and it has a silent mood to it which makes it awesome. The fact that when you're running along, and you can hear the backdraft's building up. Listening is a key element to this games' gameplay.
Control 10/10:
Not much to really say about the control, except that it's easy, and the fact that it is easy makes not too hard to enjoy the game. Easy means, many people can play the game and easily get the hang of it. While the game it self still presents a big challenge.
Gameplay 10/10:
Next to the sound this is one of the games' strongest points. Fun fun fun! Just running around aimlessly in this game is fun because of the unique way the characters to choose from look.
Story 5/10:
Well, that is one of the game's weak points I admit. There really isn't much explanation as to why the bosses at the end of each level are there. It just gives the game an extra challenge it needs to conclude each level though. Plus there isn't much explanation about the world that this game takes place in, which I would very much like to learn about. However, all the other aspects of this game overrun the lack of story by so much, which is why I feel this game still deserves a 10 out of 10.
Overall 10/10:
My suggestion to anyone who owns a sega saturn, get this game for your collection. If you're looking for games for the sega saturn that are must owns, and you cant afford the $150 for panzer dragoon saga. Get burning rangers for a fun time, and great collectable.
