"Saturn Can't Do 3D? You haven't played Quake!"
Introduction
Quake on Sega's Saturn... Ah... What is a dream could have turned out to be a complete nightmare! Thankfully, Lobotomy knew what they were doing when it came to the Saturn. This is a fine example of why the Saturn should have NOT died a premature death. Saturn can't do 3D? Pffft.
Graphics 8/10
While they're very blocky (this IS an old game, and it's on the Saturn) it looks very good. Good enough to be able to distinguish enemies, items, and whatnot. The game is very detailed like its PC counterpart but retains a very good framerate (surprisingly). Trust me, you'll never have a framerate gripe.
Control 9/10
I'll keep this section short and sweet. If you have a 3D Control Pad (that came with the NiGHTs game) then then the control is perfect. If you don't have the 3D Control Pad then I pity you. Please, do yourself a HUGE favor and get the 3D Control Pad for this game.
Gameplay 8/10
Gameplay is exactly like the PC version (after all this is the same game). If you love fragging and you love first-person-shooters this game is for you. BE WARNED: If you have a standard Saturn pad then these principles go out the window. It is HIGHLY recommend that you play this game with the Saturn 3D Pad, unless you want control nightmares. The 3D Pad is much like the DreamCast's controller.
My real gripe about the gameplay is that there's no multiplayer support whatsoever. You'd think that since it was a Quake game it would have SOME kind of MP support, but it doesn't. Online play would have been nice. :)
Sound 7/10
While this game does good on the ambiance and music side, the enemies sound really dumb. The groan will not frighten you, but will make you feel sad for the dumb creatures. The gun sounds are pretty descent. The sound of the guns and the grenades hitting the walls and floor are crisp.
Comments
I'm a big Quake fan so I had a good time with this game. Since I've beaten all Quake games I've decided to go multi-console and beat this one. It would be even more fun if it had some kind of multiplayer support. Oh well.
A descent attempt to port the beautiful PC version to the extemely inferior Sega Saturn. If you have a Saturn in this day (2002) then odds are you can't find many games for it. But if you do get lucky and find this game I'd suggest checking it out. I'm sure you'll like it.
FINAL SCORE: 9/10 (Must Have)
So why the ''9'' and not ''10''? Simply because of two reasons: No two-player mode and if you don't have a 3D pad this game is not good. GET A 3D PAD TO ENJOY IT THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE ENJOYED.
