Magic Knight Rayearth

Review by Freeway

"The last game ever on the Saturn released in the US. Sob."

RayEarth is not really an RPG; it's an action game based on the TV show of the same name.

Story: Considering the game is fairly easy, and the videos are finally being produced in the States I will not give anything away. You follow along three Japanese school girls as they get whisked away into an alternate world (Cephiro) in order to save it.

Graphics: If you like the old school look of hand drawn graphics then you've just about reached nirvana. Unfortunately the sprites are so overbearing at times the motion does slow down some. The cinemas (standard Saturn half-screen and slightly grainy look) are laced throughout the game to further the story. The cinemas (despite the systems' weakness) really draw you into the game and the hearts of the characters.

Sound: Okay, I must admit I've liked the songs that Working Designs has redone on all of their games (though Jennifer does sing out her nose and not use her head to resonate, and doesn't project her voice as well as she could...) the theme song for RayEarth is the best WD has ever done! Instead of trying to translate the original song Vic used his own lyrics (like always). I LOVE the game theme song! Now watching the redone US version of the TV show of RayEath makes me cringe...
The game music some of the best on the Saturn. There is a whole lot of talking! The characters just about talk everything vocally! (which is semi-amazing in a video game)
Plus WD added voice to the girls' diaries.

Gameplay: The control does have a slippery feel to it, but you get used to it after a while. Their swords just seem too short. Fuu will be a major character since she has bow and arrows (which has yet to appear in the TV show). The puzzles are not too hard, but there some areas the require some pin point jumping before you ever find the ''float'' magic.

Overall: I must admit I played this game before the US show ever came to tape and after watching a few of the shows on tape, you'll want to go back and play the game!
It's not too long, not too hard, fun and deifitely a keeper!
The last game on the Saturn system and it was by Working Designs!
