Alien Trilogy
Review by Rugal
"Decent FPS game."
In terms of games, the Alien movies haven't done that badly at all, with games like Alien 3 on teh SNES and the Aliens arcade game with Konami, plus others. There have been a few duds on the way but Alien Trilogy, the only Alien game to appear on the Saturn, is a good game.
Alien Trilogy is called so because it has 3 main levels, each from one of the films (this game was made before Alien Resurrection, the fourth film, was released by the way) The first level is supposedly set at the place of Aliens, the second level is set where Alien 3 took place and the final level takes place at the bone ship seen in the first Alien movie. You get to play as Ripley (the star of the Alien movies) in her quest to destroy all aliens.
Being an FPS (first person shooter) though it doesn't really matter which level you are on as the game play is still the same -kill aliens. There are plenty of alien types running around trying to kill you, including drones, dog aliens, face huggers and more, but in some of the later levels you'll fight against company marines and super soldiers.
Each level is set at a very different place, and in each level there are several missions. Each mission has a set of goals, such as destroy certain things or collect something, but you can be assured that there of plenty of enemies in each mission to kill or avoid being killed by.
You start out with just a pistol, but more weapons will become available fairly early on including shotguns, pulse rifles, flame throwers, smart guns etc. Be on the look out for ammo too though, or before you know it you'll be out of ammo for everything. Other items, such as health packs, are also in the levels so look out for those as well, especially if you are hurt.
Whilst the levels are in 3D, all of the enemies are 2D sprites, Doom style. That said, this game runs a lot smoother than Doom and is one of the better FPS games on the Saturn, although Quake still holds the tile of being the best Saturn FPS.
Alien Trilogy has some very good sound. All of the weapon noises are taken straight from the films, and the music used in each level creates a good atmosphere similar to the movies, especially when playing with the lights off.
One problem this game has is the level designs, there are many confusing missions and some of them feel boring. Another problem is that there are no multi player modes at all -so it's unlikely you'll be playing this game again, at least for a few months, after you have finished it.
Even then, if you are bored of Quake or love the Alien movies, this is a decent game worthy of your time.
6/10
