Introduction (NBA 001)
NBA Jam is no holds barred, two on two basketball. There are no fouls and
very little limitations. The game is all about flash. Dunking in the game
is super human, as you jump three times as high as the hoop is and do
multiple flips. It is best played with friends (up to four people can play
at once) but is enjoyable by your self. You can play though an entire
season and then some. Every team from the 1994 season is in the game with
two players for each team. The game is dated, but is still some awesome
arcade fun.
Title Screen (NBA 002)
At the title screen, press start to bring up the menu. You have three
options to choose from. Pressing A, B, or X will take you through the Demo.
Use start to select the one you want.
Head To Head:
If you are playing with one or more other people, head to head will pit
you against a friend with a computer controlled player on your team. You
can play with two people on one team against one person and a "drone" or two
people on each team.
Team Game:
On a Team game, you can play with another person on your team. If you
have three or four people, you can play in the same fashion as a head to
head game. The only difference between team game and head to head comes
when there are only two players. Team game allows you to play with your
friend, rather than against him or her.
Options:
Under the options screen you can do many thing. Here you can select the
speed of the game, the difficulty level, Whether or not to have Tag mode on
(see next section), Computer Assistance (see next section), In game music on
or off, and change the controls if you do not like the default.
Under the Options menu, if you turn tag mode on, it means that when
playing a single player game, you will switch between your two players,
depending on who has the ball. With Tag mode on, you will always control
the player with the ball. With tag mode off, you will always control the
same player, whether he has the ball or not.
If you have Computer Assistance turned on, as you go further into the game
with a big lead, the game will alter shot percentages making the losing team
have a better chance to score while the winning team's shot percentage goes
down. Turning this option off makes it so that your shot percentage is even
throughout the game. It is best to keep this option off until you have
become very good at the game. With this option on, even a person with a
full three point bar and who is on fire will only shoot 5% from the 3 point
line if his team has a big lead.
After you select your game type, it will ask if you want to enter your
initials for record keeping. Select yes, as this is how your game is saved.
There is no password system for the Sega CD version. Everything it stored
directly on the systems internal RAM or in the RAM cart if you move it there
(and own one).
You can select three initials, supposed to be your first, middle, and last.
I use my first name since it is only three letters. It doesn't matter what
you use, just be sure to use the same each time you turn the system on if
you want to continue your season from where you last were.
If you have any additional players, have them press start before you enter
your initials. They can also enter theirs and have their information stored
as well.
You will then see your record, rank, winning percentage, who you last beat
and the streak you are on. Press A, B or C and it will show you all the
team you have beat. After that, you will be taken to the team selection
menu. You have a choice of twenty seven teams from 1994. You will probably
quickly note that neither Charles Barkley or Michael Jordan are in the game.
This is because Jordan was playing baseball at the time and Barkley had his
own game (Shut up and Jam) so he was removed. Early arcade versions and
even the SNES version has Barkley. Another thing you will note is that the
players are considerably different than other home ports of the game. This
is because the game came out a little later than the SNES, Genesis, and Game
Gear versions so they updated the rosters.
Under each player there are four bars of green. This represents their
statistics. The more green there is, the better the player is at that
category. If there is no green, it means he is very poor, but he can do
something. For example, look at Armstrong who plays for the Chicago Bulls.
He has no stats under dunks and defense. Just because he has no stats for
dunk doesn't mean he can't dunk, he just won't do the really awesome dunks.
I'll break each team and player down, and I will use number to signify the
green bar. 0 means he has no green and 5 means it is full with the other
numbers in between. I will then average the numbers between the players and
give an overall score for the team. This score is not 100% accurate, but it
will give you an idea on which teams are good and which ones are not so good.
I also rounded the scores to the quarter mark. I didn't want to have six
decimal places in the scores.

As you can see, the teams are fairly well matched. No team seems to have
an extremely weak point or strong point. Remember that their overall score
is an average, rounded to the quarter point and a lot of what determines the
outcome of the game is how you play. The Boston Celtics are probably the
best team for two player team game while the Chicago Bulls are the best for
one person (as long as you play as Scottie Pippin and not Armstrong).
If you like the second player on the team more than the first one, you can
press A, B or C to switch the players and play as the other guy. This may
be wise if your team is the Detroit Pistons.
After you have selected your team, you will be taken to the "Tonight's
Match-up" screen. This is where you can enter cheat codes if you want. To
see what these codes are and how to enter them, look towards the bottom of
this FAQ. I find it best to only use the cheats after you get good at the
game and need an extra challenge.
After the announcer tells you the match-up you will be taken to the tip
off. If you haven't learned the controls yet, now would be a good time.
Controls (NBA 004)
The controls can be broken down into two separate sets: offence and
defense. Assuming that you have Tag mode set to off, you will only control
your guy when on defense. Pressing the shot button (button A in default
mode) allows you to jump and try to block a shot. The pass button (button C
in default mode) waves your hands around in an attempt to steal the ball.
If you press the turbo button and the pass button, you will slam your hands
into the guy, knocking him down. Doing this multiple times will cause him
to lose the ball, making for an easy steal.
When on offense, pressing the shoot button will shoot the ball. It is
best to hold it until you reach the height of your jump before letting go.
You release the ball when you let go. Pressing the pass button will allow
you to pass the ball to your teammate. If you have tag mode on, you will
only control the guy who has the ball. If you have it set to off, and you
want your teammate to shoot or pass the ball, you can press either button
and he will do that. If he is double teamed and you are open under the hoop,
press the pass button and he will pass to you. If you are going up for the
dunk and have both defenders in your face, you can pass it to your teammate
and have him shoot it automatically by pressing the shoot button. This only
works when your teammate is controlled by the computer and not by another
human.
Terminology (NBA 005)
Now that you know the controls, you probably will want to learn the
terminology of the game. If you have the manual, most of this is explained
in it. If not, here it is for you, in my own words.
Fire: If a single player scores three baskets in a row, without the other
team scoring once, he is "On fire." When you are on fire, you will have a
greatly increased chance to make 3 point shots. You will also have infinite
turbo. Your teammate can score while you are on fire and you won't loose
your touch. However he won't be on fire. If your opponent scores, you will
no longer be on fire and will have to make three shots in a row to be on
fire again. If you goal tend, it does not count as a made basket for the
other team and you will remain on fire.
Turbo: Under each human player is a turbo bar. By holding the turbo button
you can run slightly faster, have better defense and make spectacular dunks.
Your turbo bar will run down and eventually run out. Your turbo regenerates
automatically when not in use. A players shoes will turn the color of the
turbo bar when turbo is in use. By being on fire or using the turbo code,
you won't run out of turbo at all.
Dunks: Probably the best part of the game, slam dunks are done by holding
down the turbo button and pressing the shoot button. You have to be close
to the basket and not be guarded closely. You can dunk from the free throw
line and in towards the basket. The closer you are, the less spectacular
your dunk will be. The dunk stat also comes into play. Players with little
or no dunking ability can't do the fancy dunks and will miss more often.
Fouls: In NBA Jam, there are no fouls. You can push players and knock them
down intentionally and you won't get called for a foul. This is actually
the best way to steal the ball. You can't go out of bounds and you can't
travel. There are only two things called in the game: Goal Tending and Shot
Clock Violation.
Goal Tending: Goal tending is called when a player grabs the ball out of
the air after it starts to come down over the basket. If Goal Tending is
called, the team who shot the ball gets the points and the player who
committed goal tending has to inbound the ball.
Shot Clock Violation: A Shot Clock violation occurs when a team has held
the ball for 24 seconds and has not had a shot hit the rim. When there are
10 seconds left on the shot clock, it will appear in the corner. If you do
not have a shot at least hit the rim before time expires, the ball will go
to the other team automatically.
Now that you know the controls, and what the terms mean, lets play some
ball! At the tip off screen, press all three buttons as much as you can to
control the tip. Possession switches at each quarter. The style of play
will very from player to player but here are some tips on how to do well and
keep up with the other team:
Tips (NBA 006)
The first thing you should always do is use your turbo button as much as
you can. It will regenerate during the inbounds play. Keep an eye on it so
you aren't using it when you don't have any left (no point in that, right?).
Since you can't get called for a foul, go ahead and knock down the other
team. The best time to do this is under your own basket, right after you
make a shot. When the computer inbounds the ball, they almost always pass
it right back to the inbounder. You will be on the top of the screen so go
directly after that guy and knock him down. Let go of your Turbo and wait
for him to get back up. Knock him down again and again until he loses the
ball. Run after the ball and grab it. Usually the other two guys will be
down court so you can slam the ball in while the only defender nearby is on
the ground.
When the other team is on a fast break, use your turbo to run behind the
guy with the ball. You will catch up to him when he goes to slam the ball.
Right as he jumps up, hit him with the turbo pass combo and he will fall
flat on his face and probably lose the ball. Grab it and pass to your
teammate who is probably at mid court with an open lane for the slam.
All computer controlled players will try to go in for the dunk (so long as
they aren't losing by a lot of points and in the 4th quarter. This being
the case, stand outside the three point line and when your teammate goes in
for the dunk, have him dish it back to you for the open three.
On the rare chance that the other team shoots a long jumper, stand under
the basket and jump as the ball comes towards you. You can easily grab the
ball out of the air. Be careful not to goal tend though.
If you are, you can have as many as 15 steals by the half and easily score
50 points by your self. Just keep in mind that the more you steal the ball,
the more opportunities you will have and the more points you will score. By
the end of the game, shoot to have 30 steals, 10 blocks and 10 rebounds.
You can easily score 30-40 points more than your opponent, assuming you have
computer assistance turned off.
If you are really good at the game, you may want to consider turning on
computer assistance. When you have a huge lead in the game, the computer
will make it so the other team has almost a 99% chance to make even full
court shots and steal the ball when you try to drive by. It certainly isn't
fair, but makes the game close and exciting.
Codes and Secrets (NBA 007)

Questions and Answers (NBA 008)
Q: What is the highest scoring game ever?
A: I am unsure of what the highest scoring game ever is, but I have had
games where both teams score over 100 points in quadruple over time. The
most un balanced game I have ever had actually came while I was writing this
FAQ. The Final score was 205-53. I had 177 points, 53 three pointers, and
an amazing 51 steals. If you have done better, send me some evidence and I
will include you here too.
Q: What team is the best?
A: It depends on a couple of different factors. The biggest one is what
you are best at. If your style is to stay outside and hit three point shots,
then you will want a team that is good at that. If you are playing a Team
Game, you will want a team that has two good players. I have had single
player success with the Chicago Bulls (Pippin is one of the best players in
the game) as well as with the Seattle Super Sonics. The Celtics are also
good. All in all, you can win with any team. It all depends on your skill
level.
Q: Can you use more than one "Tonight's Match-up" codes at once?
A: Yes. Aside from the fact that every human player can enter every code,
you can also enter more than one code at a time. I have found that there is
time enough to enter every code that I have provided. The only one that
doesn't seem to work is the dunk code. However, if a player used the Fire
code, he or she does not need to use the infinite turbo code because when
you are on fire, you will have infinite turbo.
Q: What is this roster different than the ones on the Genesis and SNES?
A: This game was released a few months after those versions came out. The
designers decided that since there was the delay in the release that they
should go ahead and update the rosters to reflect the current teams. Some
players were left out, some switched teams and some new ones were added. I
believe this is the only version of NBA Jam (original NBA Jam, not including
Tournament Edition) to have this roster.
If you have more questions, please send them my way. I will include them
here and send you an e-mailed response.
