"Working Design's first Sega CD release after Lunar is a disapointment."
Vay was Working Design's second release for the Sega CD after Lunar, and boy was it a disappointment.
Graphics-5
The graphics were bad for the time. The enemies aren't that well drawn, and the characters are the usual bigheaded sprites. The spells and attacks from the battles are pretty bad as well. The animated scenes are decent, though.
Sound-5
The music to this game is pretty good, but the score is taken down by the god-awful sound effects. Ugh. The sound of a sword hitting an enemy is just a nondescript thud, and the others are horrible too.
Story-7
The story is one of the better things about the game. The man character is Sanders (sp?), and his bride is stolen from him, and his kingdom is ransacked. He gets a few friends along the way to help him. It's nothing too original, but it works.
Gameplay-5
The battles are fought from the old Dragon Warrior perspective, but at least you can see your characters. The fights are just boring as hell. And some bosses are pretty hard, so you have to do a lot of leveling up. With the bad graphics, they're not pretty to watch anyway. Some of the puzzles are just stupid, too. Like one where there is a room with about 30 doors, and only one of them has the exit.
Overall-5
Way worse than Lunar. The only thing saving this game is the wacky humor that Working Designs put into the game. I can't imagine why they translated this game when they had tons of games to choose from.
