"Not a bad game"
Jaguar XJJ20 is a racing game for the Sega CD. I guess it wasn't a success, because it is really hard to find any information about this game at all. I don't even know how I came to own it. In Jaguar XJJ20 you race cars made by the Jaguar car company on several different tracks overseas The goal of the game is to of course, try to get the lowest possible time you can. A standard racing game. Jaguar XJJ20 is by no means a revolutionary racing game, but its not a piece of crap either. Plus, considering there are very few actual racing games available on the Sega CD, this one might be one of your best options.
Graphics 5/10: The graphics really aren't that great. It seems to me that this game could have easily been released on the Genesis. The car and background are in sprite format, as opposed to the usual motion captured objects used in almost every other Sega CD game. The backgrounds could be mistaken for those of Road Rage. The only bright side to all this, is at the end of the race you see a crowd, which doesn't look half bad. Although For a CD based system I would expect a little better.
Sound 5/10: The sound isn't bad in this game, but it really isn't very good either. Most of the music repeats over and over again, while the majority of the sound FXs are the motor revving and the breaks squealing.
Gameplay 8/10: Controlling your car is very easy. Even taking corners at high speeds can be mastered with very little practice. The cars are fully customizable. For every race you win, you are awarded a certain amount of money which can be spent to upgrade your car. So the better you do, the better you can do. I've always found this game to be pretty fun to play. Racing games aren't even really my type of game either. Gameplay is a solid plus in this one.
Overall 7/10: Jaguar XJJ20 isn't the best game in the world, but it can be allot of fun to play. For a system with such limited games, it is surprising that Jaguar didn't stand out more than it did. But non the less, I would probably pay up to $10 to buy this game. So if you ever see you might want to give it a chance. I don't think you will be too disapointed.
