It doesn't make sense to me...
The Donkey Kong you're familiar with now IS Donkey Kong Jr, while Kranky Kong is the original one.
They're simply redesigns that were done by Rare for the first Donkey Kong Country, that have stuck ever since. As Super Mario Kart came out long before Donkey Kong Country's character redesigns, DK's graphics are the old style.
