Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Review by iammaxhailme

"This is why Nintendo is accused of being too immature and kiddy."

This game totally doesn't deserve the words "Super Mario World" in its title. Super Mario world was one of the greatest games of all time. This is a crappy overrated game.

Normally I'm not really against kiddy games, as long as it's not like, Elmo's 123's, but seriously, this is kind of stupid.

Story: 3/10

The story here is like almost every other game. You're Mario (well, you're Yoshi, who's carrying Baby Mario), and you have to rescue someone from Bowser. But this time, instead of Peach, it's Baby Luigi. Either way, the concept is the same.

There's almost no story whatsoever here. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were captured by Kamek the Koopa, henchman to Baby Bowser. He was flying them back to his master's lair, but he accidentally dropped Baby Mario without looking. Baby Bowser gets pissed and sends some minions and creatures to re-capture Baby Mario.

I don't understand WHY he captured the babies. We know he has a crush on Peach, which is why he captured her (I won't get too graphic, but you get the general idea), but why the babies? Unless he got some time portal and saw them beating him in the future, that doesn't make much sense.

Baby Mario lands on Yoshi's island, where the Yoshis help him get to Baby Bowser's castle, taking turns for different color Yoshis. That's the whole story. Although, with the exception of the Mario RPGs, Mario has never been famous for its stories, anyway, so this isn't what's losing it a lot of points.

Gameplay: 3/10

THIS is what's losing it points. The horrible gameplay. A lot of games can be forgiven if the story is bad or the sound is bad or the graphics are bad or whatever, if the game is fun to play. But this game isn't.

Now, in this game, instead of playing as Mario, which is what's normal, you play as Yoshi. YOSHI. I'm not saying that's bad, but that's not usual, is it? This and the other game where you play as Yoshi, Yoshi's Story, aren't very good, even though Yoshi's Story is better then this.

The goal of the game is to have Baby Mario, riding on Yoshi, to get across various levels Baby Bowser's castle. To do this, Yoshi has to do a lot of things, like eat enemies and turn them into eggs, which can be thrown as ammo. Besides that, it's all a lot of running and jumping, which gets tedious.

This game's death system is very odd, though. When you get hit, Baby Mario goes in some bubble, and he starts crying and floating. If you don't rescue him in 10 seconds by jumping into the bubble, he gets re-kidnapped and brought to Baby Bowser's castle, and you lose a life. I guess the losing a life makes sense, since the point of the game is to NOT get Baby Mario kidnapped, but why would he float in a bubble instead of falling to the ground? Logic hasn't often played a part in Mario games, though.

Attacking is also kind of odd. The eggs I mentioned before can be thrown at enemies. This is useful when you need to hit enemies in the air, since Yoshi can't jump to the top of the screen, although he can jump quite high. Of course, you can use the original Mario method of killing your enemies, jumping on their head. However, if you're off even by a little bit, you hit the enemy's side, and you lose Baby Mario.

Another way to attack is to get a watermelon. When you get one, Yoshi can spit seeds out of his mouth at high speed, although only for a limited number of seeds/time, I don't know which. But it is useful. It also makes for some fun target shooting mini games, which are a high point in the game.

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics in this game are definitely its highest point. Although great graphics are not enough to make up for bad games, they're definitely a plus, and they earned this game 1 or 2 points from me. While the graphics are great, I don't really like the immaturity of them. But a lot of people do, so if you do, you'll totally love these graphics.

Music: 4/10

The music is OK. It's happy simple lighthearted tunes, like in all Mario Games. However, it's kind of kiddy. But the thing I really HATE about this game's audio is the sound effects. They're so... stupid! Seriously. The babies crying is extremely irritating, and when Yoshi gets hit, he yelps, and that's annoying. When he jumps, it sounds like he's going "ahahahahaha", and that is also very annoying.

Replay Value: 3/10

The replay value is not good in this game, obviously. But it rarely is in side scrollers or platformers. I guess you could make a challenge, such as no eggs or such, but still, you can play through the regular game once, and then it's not fun anymore.

Rent or Buy?

Neither. Besides the fact that the game's not good anyway, I don't think you'll be able to find it anywhere, anyway, seeing as its probably over ten years old.
