"A grotesquely bad game."
HyperZone for the SNES is by far the worst game I have ever played on the beloved SNES. It is a lazily put together piece of shooting trash. I was hoping I would get something like Star Fox, an excellent game of whose gameplay I wanted to further explore on the SNES, I found this and thought it was what I was looking for but no, I was very, very wrong. It was a horrible decision but perhaps in the end a good one to realize how bad a game can be. But I degress...
Graphics 1/10
Really bad mode 7 stuff here. Absolutely horrendous. The colors are way too bright and seriously nauseating to watch. The ship is really stupid looking and whole game just repeats and repeats stuff.
Sound 1/10
Blips and bloops, seriously there is no music at all. The soundtrack felt like a rip off from space-invaders. And the sounds were so annoying. It was seriously hard to play this game, it gave me headaches. The bad graphics and sound combine to create this aura of madness and frustration that is hard to express in words.
Gameplay 1/10
The game's music and graphics already make this game hard to play, and the game itself is horribly designed. The only area you can move is a very small little box in the middle of the screen and your ship is so big you can hardly see anything. This game is not meant to be winnable. So I guess it might be worth mentioning that if you want a really hard but very unrewarding game, HyperZone might be right for you.
Story 1/10
There is no story, sometimes that is fine but it really just makes this game worse. I get a stomach cramp just thinking about it.
Controls 1/10
Very slow and sluggish, I couldn't get the ship to move fast enough and a lot of buttons were not used which I thought was a waste.
Overall 1/10
This game may cause you to contemplate suicide if you can even begin to conceive the horridness of it all. If you ever manage to find this game, I dare you to buy it and play it. You will be blown away.
