Illusion of Gaia

Review by Event Omega

"Wannabe Zelda? Hardly. Just as good."

I talked to others about this game, and most of them have never even heard of it, never played it, or it is crappy to them. Well I say nuts to that! This game is great, and honestly, the best action/RPG I have ever played next to MML.

Music: Good, for the most part, but a lot of times, I was to emmersed in the game play. But I did notice the music inside Gaia's little domain, you know the place where you save? It was really cool, soft and smooth. I also played it when I was young, so I didn't really notice the music. I am kind of sorry that I didn't pay attention. It could have been some great music for all I know. I might just go back to play it again, just for the music.

Gameplay: Actionish. I loved it all. The battles were a lot of fun, and some of the puzzles were challenging. The skills were cool, and I liked the incentive thing you got after killing every enemy in a room. The coolest thing though, was the fact that you could change the main character into different characters. Most action/RPG's have only one character. But, in this game, the fact that you could change into another character, and you had to use the character to continue in dungeons, really stuck out in my mind. At the time, it was the most innovative thing I had ever seen. I was like, word. The gameplay was defenitley the best part of the game. But the main character's weapon, a flute, had me thinking, ''What a wuss.'' But as it turns out, the flute RULES! It has super powers. The controls were good also. I didn't have any problems moving or anything like that. The camera angles were good also, none of that I can't see anything stuff. All in all, it lived up to be a great competitor against the Zelda series, and I think, might have one if a lot more came out.

Story: The story is very cliched in one part, as the hero meets a princess and she falls in love with him. But not so cliched in another part, as the hero doesn't even really care, as he is only on a mission from his long lost father. The hero meets up with a unique cast along the way, most who are useless, but one of them does a lot of good. The characters turn out to be ordinary idiots, who can't keep up with Will and his super powers. And the worst part, you don't even get to see your enemy. The final boss, or the maing bad guy, that is. I suppose they were trying to take a different approach, but it sucked. The story is OK, the NPC's suck, and the villans you don't even see.

Graphics: Ok. In the way olden times of the SNES, they were good. I liked them, but as I have said before, graphics do not make or break a game for me. I don't see why they should for anyone. Anyway, the colors are good, characters are fairly detailed, as are the enemies. I like the hero and his transfomation designs for some reason. The map is not really detailed at all, in fact, it is down right crappy. But oh well, what can you expect from the SNES?

Overall, a solid game with a lot of gameplay. I am glad I still have the game, as I am known to go through it here and there, just for the fun of it. I think it might be a problem to find it now, but if you can, it is defenitely a keeper for anyone. A must have for the action/RPG collection.
