Terranigma

Review by Yakuza

"One of the last great SNES RPG games, and it's awesome!"

Yakuza’s review for the SNES-game Terranigma, a game made by Enix in 1996, one of the last RPG games for the SNES, and it was one of the most beautiful I’ve seen for the SNES. I don’t know if this game was released in the U.S, because I heard some rumors it wasn’t. Since I’m not a U.S. resident myself, I don’t know for sure. Oh well, I have it here in my tv-gaming library, so at least I can enjoy it. Heh, it was released in Europe, so I bought it immediately...

#Storyline:#
You name the hero in the beginning. Then, the story starts. You and some of the villagers stand in a room, talking to each other. Then you decide to open a sealed door, because all of you are curious of what's inside. The hero (you) picks up a pot and throws it on the door until it finally breaks. Then something like an evil spirit gets released and comes out of the door, and freezes everyone in the village into ice, except you and the old man. You walk down the basement and find a strange creature that tells you what happened. He tells you that you must save the world from a dreadful future. You go up and talk to the old man, he gives you some info and then you go out in the wide world again to seek the answer.'' Quite classic, eh? Well, the story is good, this is just a short view of it. Play the game and see it for yourself!

Score storyline: 9.2/10

&Graphics:&
Being a SNES-RPG game, this is stunning!!! It’s definitely one of the best graphics to any SNES-game I’ve seen, and remember, this is an RPG!!!!! This game can be compared to the graphics for Chrono Trigger. The characters and the environment is sooooo great in this game, there are lovely animations, decent coulors, and the best: the middle sequences where one continent get resurrected in the beginning, then you’ll see an awesome cinema-sequence, which definitely could be exchanged for any playstation game. The details is great done, the attacks and special magic tricks are cool, the towns are awesome, It’s hard to describe how graphic is, but trust me, Terranigma’s graphic is beautiful!!! The graphics are superb, well done Enix!!!

Score graphics: 10/10 (No doubt about it, it TRULY deserves 10 :)

()Control:()
Terranimga is an ACTION/RPG which means it’s an RPG but with the control as an action game. Confusing? Ok, you ever played the classic game Secret of Mana, Zelda: A link to the Past, or Secret of Evermore?!? It’s the same control in Terranigma, you move as a platform game, not in text commandos. Personally I prefer this type of gaming, it’s much more free than text commando games (but I still love that type of games too) and that’s a huge favor for Terranigma. The fighting-sequences are cool because you use the spear in different techniques (but it could have been more techniques). You can also use special items like fire rings(sort of spell), iron claws( stuff you climb mountains with), and there’re much more to discover in this game. You’ll love the control!!!

Score control: 9.2/10

=Music/Sound:=
Most fitting. Deep tunes, cool sounds, songs you’ll dig forever. Ok, they might get a little boring after a while. But no problem, the music is quite good, but frankly, the other catagories in this game is better(for example, the graphic is better than the music). It’s hard to describe music, anyone could think the music in this game is awesome but if you compare it to games like ff3, Terranigma’s music/sound is a little ¤worse¤. The sound is quite good.

Score music/sound: 8.8/10

+Gameplay:+
Cool! It’s like Secret of Mana, you’re not fighting with text-commandos but with a spear weopon, like Secret of Evermore. You are totally free to walk as you want (on the contrary to Enix other game, Illusion of Gaia where you are bound to walk as the map says) and the environment creates a lovely gameplay. The only reason why the gameplay ain’t perfect is that you can only use one sort of weopon, the spears. And the control is a little hard to use, but otherwise the gameplay is great. The story is well done, which will suck you deep into it(even if it’s not perfect).

Score gameplay: 9.3/10

{Summary:}
So why don’t Terranigma get a 10/10 instead of a 9/10? What’s bad with it? What’s the weakness? Maybe it’s the gameplay itself. It doesn’t attract me as much as Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana did. And you sure got to know that this game was made 96’, 3 years after Secret of Mana ( or 2 years after ff3). But if you want a good RPG, and if you’re looking for an ACTION/RPG like SoM or Secret of Evermore, this is the right decicion! Maybe it’s the storyline that’s not so involving. Ok, it’s good but I think the storyline for Chrono Trigger and FF3 is better. And the music is not perfect(even if it’s good) so the avarage score drops to 9 instead of 10. But sure, this is definitely a great game! Go get it now, buy it for $20-30 U.S.
