Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Review by Walker Boh Ohmsford
"The last installment in the Super NES Star Wars Trilogy!"
Well here it is. It's the last installment in the SNES Star Wars Trilogy, and let me tell ya. It's got a lot going for it. The missing point in the score I'll get to later. For now, let's just get onto the review.
Story 10-10. Well..It's Return of the Jedi after all. You first start off in a desperate attempt to rescue Han Solo from the vile Jaba the Hut. I don't believe you get to fight him directly though, but I bet he'd have been too easy, given how he is so fat he can hardly move. After that you will go to Endor to destroy the Shield Generator while various members of your party embark on missions of their own. And Luke's mission? To find and destroy the Emperor and redeem his father Anikan Skywalker. And yes, you do get to confront the Emperor in battle near the end of the game, and boy is he tough!
Gameplay 10-10. Like the others you can customize the control if ya don't like it. It's all fairly reliable. One thing I don't get though, is why Super Star Wars didn't use a password system and its two sequels did. Like its prequels SROTJ is full of cheats. You can enter a sound test right in the middle of the game if ya wanna. However, this game makes it so you can't skip the last level, which you could do in both the previous games. I like this, although the last level is a bit hard, (I'll get to that later).
Audio 10-10. Again, great sound. This time when you activate your Light Saber it sounds just as electrifying as in the movies, and the sound it makes when the saber is swung is quite delightful to the ears. There are also a few voices from the movie later on, and when the characters suffer damage it actually sounds like them. Well..Luke doesn't, unless he burps when he suffers damage. Again, the music was right out of the movies, and the Emperor's theme, (not the boss theme but that theme that played when the Emperor and Vader were talking), is as well-orchestrated here as it was in the movie. Great job Lucas Arts!
Challenge 10-10. No lacking elements here. This game will frustrate you sometimes, especially the Emperor, whom I will freely admit I was unable to defeat without using one of the in-game cheats I mentioned earlier. The missing point in this game's overall score comes from the inhuman difficulty of the last level. The final level of the game features the Milennium Falcon as it races out of the exploding Death Star II. You have to navigate narrow trenches, which is hard enough to do on its own. Add onto that the fact that you have the explosion spreading outwards from the center and destroying everything it touched. Ya don't wanna get caught in it. I like a good challenge, but this was overdoing it a little.
Overall 10-10. If ya an find it, buy it or rent it. It'll be worth it if you're a true Star Wars fan, believe me.
