Dragon Ball Z: Chou Saiya Densetsu

Review by Kodiak

"I sense a large battle power coming from this game!"

This is one of the few good games to come from the DBZ franchise, but boy did they ever manage to do this one right!

Story: 8/10

Legend of the Super Saiya-Jin covers the opening sagas of DBZ, the Saiya-Jin Saga and the Freeza Saga, except for a few differences (which I wont mention) they almost exactly match the plot of the shows.

Normally I would give the story high marks, a 9 at the least, but at points this game sorta leaves you hanging if you dont know what happened next in the series and even though you are probably not playing this game unless you are a DBZ fan (though I imagine at least a few non-fans played this game cause of it's quality) no excuse exists for letting that occur.

Graphics: 10/10

This game puts the Mode-7 capabilities of the SNES to use more than any game on the system that I recall playing, in addition to that the cinemas for the signature attacks of the characters are for the most part well done (some attacks aren't the proper color).

The world map in this game is pretty basic and most of the characters on it are somewhat blocky but the sheer amount of Mode-7 effects in this game more than makes up for it, it's really overwhelming sometimes.

Sound: 7/10

The sound effects are decent, pretty standard really while the background music is a touch above average. If only the SNES had better audio capabilities.

Gameplay: 9/10

Some of the best combat of any RPG, the card system is pretty cool and makes it so that almost anything can happen in most fights between parties with similar battle powers.

The only downside is that the card system can be a touch on the difficult side to figure out for the first time player, but the learning curve should be overcome through about an hour (at the most) of experimentation.

Replay Value: 6/10

Eh, it's an RPG and despite a few bells and whistles to make it better than average in this department, a reason to play through more than once or twice is hard to find.

Summary:

If your a fan of the series you definetely need to play through this game. Even if you know what happens it's still a hoot to have some control over it yourself.

If your not a fan of the series this is still a pretty decent RPG, but I'd recommend having an FAQ around so that you can get help at points where the storyline leaves you hanging.

Whichever category you fall into, just play this game.

Overall score: 9
