WCW Super Brawl Wrestling
Review by BrakZero
"Eh..."
”What the hell?”
That was my first reaction to this game. I mean, who hasn’t played better SNES wrestling games? WCW Superbrawl Wrestling has got to be the worst wrestling game I’ve ever played. Not only does it feature those 80-year old WCW wrestlers from the early 70s, (=P) but it also has bad control, overly simple gameplay, and annoying music to go with it! Eww…
Graphics
The sprites were pretty big and pretty clear. They moved kind of strangely though. They looked very stiff compared to other wrestling games released at the time. (Must be the age. ^_^) The wrestling ring was viewed from a corner, so you see it as a diamond rather than a square. This wasn’t a bad thing, but it sure was a bit strange when you first look at it, especially if you were just playing another SNES wrestling game. Anyway, the crowd looked horrible. But then again, I haven’t seen a single wrestling game for any system that looks good...
Audio
Argh... that music! It’s so annoying! Well, I found it pretty cool for the first five minutes, but pretty soon I got annoyed. So I had to mute my television, which got rid of the sound. But wait! That’s a plus! Because the sound sucked! Punch your foe in the face, and he sounds like a dying 120-year old man. Not to mention those “slamming” sounds. When you throw your opponent against the mat, it sounds horrible. Not the least bit realistic.
But hey, there’s some voice acting! Whee. When you select you character, they occasionally pop out of their little square and say something. And I must admit it was hilarious to see Rick Steiner grab his head with both hands and say, “It’s not my fault.”
Gameplay
There are three levels of difficulty. You can go for the TV Title (easy), the US Title (medium), or the World Title (hard). Maybe it’s just me, but I found even the easiest pretty hard. It seems like those opponents can read your mind. (Maybe they learned it in their 90-year lifetime. HAR HAR HAR) Anyway, you can go for these with 12 different wrestlers, many of them from way back in the day. These wrestlers include people like Rick Rude, Vader, Ric Flair, and the Steiner Brothers. There’s also “Johnny B. Badd”, Sting, and Ron Simmons (who is known as Farooq right now in the WWF). And there are some other guys that I’m too lazy to name.
No grapple... that’s kinda strange. That takes quite a bit of getting used to. Instead of grappling with your opponent followed by a maneuver, you just get close to the guy and press a button. That’s what triggers the maneuvers. While this might be a good thing to some people, I hated it. It was hard to deal with, because the computerized opponent always seems to something before you, which in turn makes you extremely mad, thus making you take out your cartridge and throwing it into a wall. So as you can tell, the game is not very fun.
Replayability
Pshh. I definitely don’t want to play through this game again anytime soon. At least not in one player. If you hook up another controller, you can play the game with a friend. You can either play with each other on a tag team, or against each other. But then again, the game altogether is not good, so playing with a friend doesn’t really help.
Final Word
If you want to play a good wrestling game for the Super Nintendo, play WWF Raw or WWF Royal Rumble. Don’t play WCW Superbrawl Wrestling. It’s got a bad wrestling system, with some oldie wrestlers. And to go along with them, you’ve got your cheap sound and annoying music. There are definitely much better SNES wrestling games. So if you’re looking for a good one, stay clear of this one, because it’s not so great.
