Terranigma
Review by whoseya
"Terranigma, greatest RPG? I should think so!"
While perusing Gamefaqs one day, I was running down the Rpg list for the SNES when I noticed a game entitled, Terranigma. Noticing that it was created by the same developers as Illusion of Gaia(another great RPG) I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that it was not released in the US, but I discovered the English(as in England)version and downloaded it immediately.
What followed blew me away.
Story 10/10: Your task, revive the continents on earth and then battle to transform these lands from barren wastelands into its former splendor: plants, birds, animals, and finally, the human race. And that's just the first half! You then must traverse your newly ressurected world, meeting many helpful characters along the way, and meanwhile unraveling the mystery behind your quest. To make the journey even more enjoyable, you are placed in the role of a mischeif making teenager Ark, who is one of the most charming protaganists that the RPG genre has to offer. Along with the flying blob Yomi, and countless other vibrant personalities, you make your journey to revive the earth. And to top it all off, a big plot twist that will likely send a few chills up your spine, and you have the perfect story.
Graphics 10/10: Colorful, well animated, and detailed, these graphics give a great example of what the SNES could do. Also, it had something that many RPGs lacked, and that was the variety in the enemies you faced throughout your journey, with little to no pallete swaps. The dungeons, caves and castles are also well detailed, along with the towns, at all levels of civilization. Overall great graphics.
Audio 8/10: Perhaps the game's only weak point. While the sound effects are right on the mark, some of the music tracks are overused, and can become tiresome when running through a large, complex dungeon. But still very mood setting and overall great audio.
Gameplay 10/10: Those familiar with Illusion of Gaia or the Legend of Zelda will be right at home here. Ark has a wide variety of moves at his disposal as well as magic spells you can acquire. Only a small amount of level building is required, and the combat is enjoyable enough to tolerate such times. With an innovative menu system, and a compelling story to push you along, this game is incredible to play.
Challenge 7/10: Illusion of Gaia and Zelda veterans should not have too much trouble here, although some bosses(Bloody Mary anyone?) can be quite difficult. A good level of difficulty overall.
Replay Value 10/10: This game was so incredible that I went back and played it again right away, and many will simply to understand the complex plot, so replay value is high.
Rent? Buy? Burn? Steal? Whoseya tells all!!!
Buy if you can find it, but a little downloading never hurt anyone. It is an experience that cannot be missed. My only regret is that this is Quintet's last game before the team broke up, but we can always hope that the team will regroup for another go sometime in the near future.
Whoseyadaddy gives it a 10/10.
