Choplifter III
Review by aetherspoon
"16 boards of... um... repeditiveness?"
Now, I know that this is a SNES game, and I shouldn't expect much, but... I played Choplifter. I played Choplifter again... oh wait, that is supposed to be Choplifter III.
If you didn't know the 'plot' behind the story, here it goes. No spoilers here folks....
You are a chopper pilot. You need to airlift some hostages to rescue them from the evils of whateverisshootingatyounow. Every so often, you have to fight a 'boss' also. You can tell you have to fight a boss when you can't run away...
Anyways, the game is fun for the first few minutes, or maybe even 20 minutes tops. Then you realize you are doing the same thing over and over again...
Although you get powerups! Can't forget the powerups... that are almost completely worthless except in certain occasions. The healing is more useful.
There are 4 sectors, each with multiple levels (4) on it. At the start of the level you will see something like...
SECTOR 4
LEVEL 4
HOSTAGES x 20
CHOPPERS x 01
Then you will have to go through the level, rescuing hostages! Loads of fun... well, at least it was pretty fun in the NES days, but... not in the SNES days, and definitely not in the current days. You have a health gauge and unlimited gun ammo. The powerups along the way are one use (or three use, or what have you), and do a variety of things such as invulnerability (WAAAAAAY overpowered), tracking missiles, bombs, nukes... you get the idea. Each stage has a different background to it (as in color... you actually have no text in the game. Like it matters for a shooter-like game). The enemies range from a guy shooting at you, a guy shooting at you with a ballistic missile, a guy shooting at you with a tracking missile, a tank, a faster tank, artillery, and the various bosses.
Music/Sound:
Not talking FF6-level music, but pretty good for a SNES shooter.
Score: 8/10
Graphics:
Average. Can't really say more then that.
Score: 7/10
Gameplay:
Good in the beginning! Horrible at the end... Luckily, the game is too short to begin with - you can theoretically beat it in 1.5 hours or so.
Score: 6/10
Replay ability:
You have three difficulty modes, and multiple lives to start each. Too bad the game is too boring to play multiple times... at least they put effort in.
Score: 4/10
Plot:
This is a shooter. Shooters are exempt from Plot ratings for obvious reasons.
Score: N/A
Overall:
If you are bored, play it one time. Won't take long to beat anyways. I would say ''rent'', but you can't rent SNES games anymore.
