Tiny Toon Adventures: Wacky Sports Challenge

Review by SCCAN85

"Finally the REAL olympics have come to the SNES!"

Konami has made many great video games, but this in my view is one of the greatest they've made for the super nintendo. The only reviewer for this game totally trashed this game, so if you've already seen that one you can now see the review that scored it high. This is a very kiddy type game, but I like it a lot for many reasons which I will state in the bottom of this paragraph. Tiny Toon Adventure Wacky Sports Challenge(TTAWSC)is a very fun party game that you can play with two people. If you get a multiplayer adapter you can then play with 3 or 4 players. TTAWSC was made in 1994 and contains good graphics, good gameplay , good controls, and good replay value. What else could you ask for? I am very surprised that the other reviewer gave it a 1, but it looks like the person didn't like it for the challenge or because he didn't like the show or because it is too kiddy. Anyways I'll be reviewing the GAMEPLAY, SOUND/MUSIC, CONTROLS, GRAPHICS, and REPLAY VALUE for Tiny Toon Adventures Wacky Sports Challenge and you can see my view of this great game. I will also include the STORY of the game.

GAMEPLAY:(9/10)The gameplay for this game is soooooo fun. The basic thing you do in this game is choose a Tiny Toon, Buster, Babs, Plucky, or Dizzy and go through a bunch of weird and wacky events and compete for the gold. It's kind of like the olympics but with Tiny Toon characters and different events, much different. There is a big variety in the events and there all wacky. There are a lot of events, but there are four types of difficulties and in each difficulty level the events are different and of course harder. You don't choose the difficulty in options. When playing against the computer you start out in Easy mode, then it's Normal mode, then Hard mode and then Super mode unless you use a password. There are about a total of 15-20 events, but some events are in different difficulty modes and it gets harder. I won't spoil the fun for you, but some of the events range from weightlifting to bungee jumping and ice cream throw. The way you win is if you get a lot of points and basically more than your opponents. Hampton the pig will tell you the rules before you do each event because he is the spokesperson of this 'sports contest'. The points gets calculated and whoever has the most is in the lead. Then you keep up with your points until the end of the difficulty mode and then the winners are announced to see who gets either Bronze, Silver or Gold in that mode. That's basically all you have to know about this game as of what to do. The only drawback of its gameplay is that the computer isn't really hard to beat , but grab a friend and plug this in and I guarantee you it is 10 times funner unless your friend is horrible at video games. Two players is nothing different then playing with 1 player. The only difference is that you take turns to do the event, but that depends on what the event is. For example, if you are doing the saucer throw event then player 1 goes first and then after his/her turn player 2 is up. Also in an event like the Obstacle course, both player 1 and 2 race at the same time with the computer. It also doesn't really matter what character you use, because there stats aren't different, but there ending is. I just picked my character based on how he/she is on the show and how much I liked them. This isn't really needed, but I am always Plucky. Just to let you know. :)

SOUND/MUSIC:(7/10)This is pretty good sound and music for the SNES. You can hear a boing when someone messes up and the other cartoon sound FX are great also. The music in this game is nice and is pretty good ,but it's not bad either. The music during the races has a fast paced beat in order to make you try harder and win. The sounds were clear and were taken from the cartoon. I wouldn't say the audio is special, but it is pretty good for 1994. Konami could've probably done a little better with the variety of sounds and music, but I'd say it fits well with the events. When I was younger I remember playing this game and memerizing the beat to the intro music and the music in the game. The showing of the intro Tiny Toons theme was very accurate from the real show. The only difference is that there wasn't any singing, but that's OK. The sound library isn't very big in TTAWSC and I would say that this is the only thing that needed the most improvement in this game. Overall the sound and music together was pretty good.

CONTROLS:(10/10)There was absolutely no problem during the game with the controls. They're easy to use and you don't have to worry about the two top buttons. The buttons were almost the same for every event, so it isn't confusing to memerize what to do. If you can't memerize the buttons for the events than you can see Hampton and he will tell you the controls before the event. The characters and the game itself responded to the controls really well and the buttons responded as well. Before playing Tiny Toon Adventures Wacky Sports Challenge I have to warn you that you better have very strong thumbs because during the events you have to press two buttons(A and B) really fast. That's if you want to win and get a very high score. A very cool thing about TTAWSC is that if you don't have strong thumbs, you can work out and have fun at the same time. I have very strong thumbs now and it's mainly to this game. Anyways the controls were easy and comfortable to play with during gametime and if you don't have good controls it doesn't really make the game fun. They are perfect controls!

GRAPHICS:(9/10)The graphics in this game were pretty good for the SNES. It was kind of like the graphics in Buster Busts Loose, but more animated. The characters and backgrounds have nice coloring on them and both the characters and the backgrounds were well detailed. To put it in short...very cartoony graphics. The only thing wrong was some of the backgrounds, but thats not a big deal. It isn't much a big deal to me atleast. I am the type of person that only cares about gameplay. The graphics in this game however appealed to the eye and so I was deeply impressed by the detail that Konami provided within TTAWSC. As I said aout the backgrounds.....well only some stages has little blobs or blocky looking things at the very top corner, so because of Konamis laziness they get a 9 instead of a 10 for graphics. The graphics overall were very amazing and impressive. It actually seemed like the cartoon shows, because of the coloring most likely. That's pretty much all I can say about the graphics.

REPLAY VALUE:(10/10)After I beat it I thought I wouldn't play it that much again, but I was wrong. I played this sooo much and I played it with different people challenging each other many times at different events. There is also a password that allows you to access all the events and you can select what mode it is in, so if you want and easy one then you can. I think this is meant for practice, but a lot of people just use it to have a lot of fun by themselves or even with a friend and play. It is also easier to play a certain event. For example, let's say there is an event that is only on the two hardest modes then it is easier to use the password. Anyways just playing the computer with each character is fun also. The replay value overall for Tiny Toon Adventures Wacky Sports Challenge is very high.

And now for the........

STORY:(8/10) The story is unique. The story is Montana Max, a rich brat, is holding a sports contest with very weird and unique events for the four contestants. The winner of this sports contest recieves 1 million dollars and the four contestants are at each others throats for the money. Each of the 4 contestants has some sort of dream they want to do when they will win the money and if you want to see whether there dream comes true or not you have to beat the game to find out. The story is original kind of, but the fact that it has weird and wacky events is what makes it unique. The story seems like not much time was spent in thinking of it also. Overall, the story was OK.

OVERALL:(9/10)This is a great game(better than that Tiny Toons beanstalk crap on Playstation)which I think Konami should make a sequel with more events and more characters. Even though this game is directed towards younger players it's still a great game for any age. Tiny Toon Adventures Wacky Sports Challenge provides a great party gaming experience that many people experience so this is good for the whole family also. This is a must buy game, so buy it in the store if you can cause I don't think it's available for rent anymore. This review was made in the year 2000. Have a nice day!
