Review by Tom B
"This was clearly Brian De Palma's best film, and clearly one of Ocean's best games."
You are part of the elite do-anything-to-get-the-job-done police force nicknamed The Untouchables. You’ll experience Chicago Street Shootouts, Gangster Warehouse Raids, the occasional busting down on a Counterfeit Operation and maybe even a showdown with none other than Al Capone himself!
Story: 6/10
There are 5 assignments to this game which is just a fancy word for a level. However it is a very nice format because it makes you feel like you are selecting a case to follow and you can select whichever one you want to do first. You choose an assignment and are just thrown right into it. I wish they would have added a little more story art to the game… even just a still action shot of the level to come or a random setting of Chicago would do. This story has meat and potatoes, but it needs the cheese and wine. After each assignment you are given the next day’s Chicago Post to read the headlines, which barely ties each assignment together.
Gameplay: 10/10
This game is very versatile in that each assignment comes with a different style of gameplay.
Assignment #1 - Downtown Shootout is a 3rd person shooter while Assignment #2 – Counterfeit Operation is a beat em up’ side-scroller. With each new assignment comes new controls, but it’s a small price to pay for this refreshing idea. This game does require some skill and reflexes.
The bosses in Assignment #2 can be very difficult but that’s nothing that can’t be fixed by playing it for a week straight. Assignment #5 – Alphonse Capone is just like the arcade game Time Crisis where you press a button to hop above a barrier or wall to shoot and then you can slink back behind the wall.
Graphics: 9/10
The in-game menu could be improved, it’s a little bland. However the graphics in the game are top-notch. Each assignment is well detailed and each one dabbles a bit in a different innovative matter. In Assignment #4 – The Courthouse you can go into the basement of the Courthouse which is dark, but whenever you shoot your wonderful Thompson then the area brightens up. I hate to say it but simple tricks like this really make the game enjoyable. You will also be pleased to hear that 90% of everything in the game blows up. The end of the game is very similar to the end of the movie. Connecting to the movie as much as possible would be a very wise thing to do and Ocean did it well.
Sound/Music: 7/10
The sound and audio is good. Its all low key and non-obtrusive, which is something, I love to find in an older game. If you don’t notice the music or sound in an old game, it’s most likely a good sign.
Overall: 8/10
This game is would be a noteworthy addition to any Super Nintendo Collection. I come back to it now and then just to shoot up some thugs and make myself feel as if I’m ridding the world of gun toting gangsters. If you plan on playing this game, then you’ll find my walkthrough very useful.
