Review by Braben
"Another mediocre and completely uninteresting action/rpg wannabe."
Brain Lord is just another of those games that are like a weird mix between an action rpg and any Zelda title (as always, excepting for Zelda II) like Neugier, Gulliver Boy, Alcahest, SoulBlazer and many more that lack any interest. People insist and take them as action rpgs, but I am never going to do that because it is so obvious that they aren’t that I am not going to talk about that again, if you can’t see this then that is your problem not mine.
Plot: 3
Brain Lord’s plot is as lame as the plot of any other game in these “particular” genre, there is very little plot and when there is some it is so incredibly full of clichés and uninteresting that is almost insulting.
Graphics: 7
They are a lot like other Enix games in the genre like SouldBlazer or The 7th Saga, better than these two games in particular but nothing really impressive, good enough if you are not too demanding anyway. They are a bit bigger than it is usual in these games, but that doesn’t make them better. As good as necessary.
Music: 5
As expected, a completely irrelevant soundtrack, that is as much as I can say.
Gameplay: 6
I am not going to repeat again that this game plays like Soul Blaz.... well, you see, they are so similar that if you want to say something it is imperative to talk about those games again. Ok, I have mentioned those games one more time, but I am not going to talk about what they have in common in terms of gameplay because I have already done that in other reviews, so I will talk about the few new features, specially about a feature that I have to admit is very neat.
The first one are the puzzles, there are a lot more than in the usual game in the genre, ok, this is not exactly a new feature, doh!, damn, ok, the only interesting feature this game and that as I said before is actually a quite interesting feature that Enix should go and use in another of their “true” rpgs is the possibility to obtain fairies we can summon whenever we want to aid us, they will stay with us until we tell them to leave or if they killed, and we will have to give these fairies a name and everything. Pretty nice.
Another good thing in Brain Lord is that our weapons have a very long attack range, thankfully instead of little butter knife our hero as a super long sword and even attacks in such a way that you are probably going to hit something no matter where you are aiming.
As I always say with these games, the gamelpay is not bad, it works nicely and everything but for me “gameplay” is much more than just good controls, if a game is boring and dull, being well done (in terms of controls) and fully playable is not enough.
Overall:
Brain Lord is not a bad game, in fact now that I think I guess this is best I played in its kind, but sadly it lacks any interest, I can’t find any reason to play because if we take it as an rpg then it has absolutely no plot or character development, and as an action game gets tedious after a while. However, if you have enjoyed the above mentioned games, this one is a good choice, the best choice probably, so you know what to do.
