Star Ocean

Review by gballer

"Whoa Whoa Whoa, how is an Snes game this good?"

Welcome to my review of one of if not the best Snes game out there. During this review I'll cover various topics such as Graphics, Gameplay, Storyline, Control and Fun Factor. Hopefully this review will give you better insight to this great game and persuade you to do everything in your power to play it if you haven't already. Have fun and enjoy the review.

First up is the Graphics: In my personal opinion I would say that the graphics in this game are better than the graphics of Star Ocean 2. I feel that it's easily the best graphical game on the Snes. The characters in this game look very smooth and the towns look detailed which is always a plus. They could've made some better looking enemies though. You can see the features of each character very clearly from if they're wearing a light green headband to what type of earrings are they wearing. The dungeons are also very well produced. You can see the smallest cracks on the floor to the moss growing on the rocks. I would rate the graphics a 10/10, truly great.

Next up is the Music: Sorry guys and gals, but I really don't remember the music to well, and if I can't remember it, it probably wasn't that good. I'm not saying that it was bad, just not memorable. I'd give the music a 6/10.

Next up to bat would be Gameplay: What can I say about the gameplay except for, It's amazing. There are about 1 million different things you can do in this game, maybe not that much, but not far from it. The battle system is a mix of all out war and strategy. The thing is, you control one fighter and let the rest of your party fight on their own. You can either have them go all out or stay back and be conservative. You can also choose what type of formation you want to make sure that you keep your fighter in the front and your mages in the back. Your fighters have these things called Killer Moves, they gain these after certain levels and some are learned by powering up certain abilities. Your mages gain different spells at different levels. While controlling your fighter or mage, you can have them do certain moves depending on which moves you have set for them. I'm not to sure about the mages, but the fighters can have up to 8 moves usable at a time. You can also customize your own weapons, make your own items, and orchestrate your own music. Simply put, the gameplay is a 10/10.

Batting clean-up is the Storyline: Nothing too special about the story. Your main goal is to get a cure for this disease that your planet has been cursed with. This game has you traveling through time meeting lots of different people an making some pretty vicious enemies. The main star of this game is a young lad named Ratix. You have the possibility to team up with 8 people. The fact that you can virtually pick and choose who you want makes the story very versatile. I would say that the story is a 8/10.

Now up is the Control: The control of this game is nice, people might get a little mad early on because of the fact that you can't dash, but don't worry, you get that ability fairly quick. There isn't too much lag time and the special moves come out pretty fast. 9/10

Finally there is Fun Factor: This is probably the funnest role-playing game ever. With all of the options I mentioned and more, this game has endless possibilities. Also, after a while you're going to want to get into a fight all the time, just so you can use your Killer Moves. The one real downside of this game is the length. If you really try getting into the game and experiencing everything, the game should be lengthy. If you just want to beat it, you'll get done in a hurry. Still, I'll give the Fun Factor a 10/10.

I hope you enjoyed reading this review as much as I enjoyed making it. Have fun playing the game and see you later.
