"The first in the X series, and one of the better ones."

The original Megaman X.....I remember playing this when I was a wee lad. It was hard at the time, but I got through it(damn, damn ****ing assed Spider boss). Just a couple days ago I played through it and beat it, and now I've decided to share my thoughts on this awesome classic. Read ahead, if you dare.........MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAH!

Story: 7/10

I lost the manual a long time ago, and the story I couldn't really understand all too well, but I'll explain it the best I can.

In the year 21XX, there were new breeds of robots called Reploids, who were stronger, faster, all and all better than regular robots. One of them was Megaman X, or simply known as just X. X, as most could tell, was an improvement over the original Megaman. X is the leader of the 17th unit of fighting Reploids, he was sent to a city that was laid to ruin by Sigma and his minions. He was attacked by Vile, one of Sigma's henchmen, and nearly killed by until his partner, Zero, came to the rescue. X felt discouraged by the power of this enemy, but Zero reminds him that he's not at full power yet, so he could have a chance once he reaches full strength. So now X and Zero split up to track down Sigma's fortress and put a stop to the war he has started.

Hmmm.......that's a decent story. Better than the average Megaman game. I can't say if this is the best plot ever, but hey, it's a Megaman game! Sorry if I got the story wrong, though.

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics were really good at their time. The bosses were clearly seen in all their 16-bit glory. The weapons looked good, Megaman looked a little short, but since everyone calls him a smurf, it's ok. I thought Zero could have used a little bit of work. Sigma in the end was a bit bland, but he makes up for that badassed lightsaber. I dubed him "Darth Sigma with no red saber". Anyway, before I get off track, I'd like to say I admired the area backgrounds, mainly Sting Chamelion's stage, the last part of Storm Eagle's stage during the whole big ship thing, and the first level in Sigma's Fortress with the cool-looking purple sky. I liked the looks of this game alot.

Sound: 8/10

There was lots of sounds in this game that were cool. One of my favorite was the part in Armored Armadillo's stage where that digging machine would chase after you with that "VRRUM VRRUM VRRUM VRRUM" sound going on, then the explosions where the tank falls down a spike pit with the explosion sounds came up.

Most of the other sounds were were fine. X's buster made cool sounds when you charged up and released a fully charged shot. Then hearing your enemy die and explode from getting hit by it. Yeah, it's all good.

Music: 9/10

This has some of the better SNES music around. Most of it's all techno and and some heavy metal. The maverick battle theme, both Sigma battles, and the first two Sigma stages were some of the best. It's really good, like most other Megaman games, good music. Even the MIDI's I listened to were good! And that's saying alot right there.

Gameplay: 6/10

Let's see.....there's an introduction stage, an unbeatableable boss battle, 8 stages to choose from in random order, beat a boss and get his weapon, go to final 4 stages, beat up final boss, yeah. Typical Megaman. The series never quits this almost 20 year long trend. But there's a few new things. For one, in hidden areas, there's capsules that can give you new abilities but giving you new and spiffier armor. There's four capsules in total. And also, there's heart-shaped objects hidden in levels that increase your max health and energy tanks that you permanently keep that recharge when you pick up health items when you're at full health. Other than all that, it's basically the same as the other Megaman games.

Control: 10/10

I hardly ever have any trouble controlling X. And you can even customize the controls if you're not used to the regular control set. The ability to customize the controls is enough to give this a 10.

Replay Value: 6/10

You might wanna play it again a few more times after beating it, but just a few more times.

Rent or Buy?: BUY!!!

You should, or even better, you MUST buy this game! It's a classic, it's fun, it's challenging(except for Megaman veterans like me), all that in one package, or more like one cartridge. Just one thing before you play it: BEWARE THE DIGGING MACHINE, AND THAT DAMNED SPIDER BOSS!
