"I will now shoot myself for buying this game."
This game, is, no doubt, the worst game I have played for the Super Nintendo. There are lots of things that I can say to support this, but the main one is how the game play is set up.
The first thing that I didn't like about Space Ace was that the game just started. There was a few title screens, then the game just started, you didn't get to insert codes, load games, choose the difficulty or anything. The title screen just came up and the game started playing.
That didn't bother me much but it was disturbing when I caught myself playing the main character. I was glad I hadn't invited some friends to try it out because it was just embarrassing. The main character's name, I have no idea, because like I said, the game just started; there was no story introduced. He is an adolescent young man in a space suit that walks funny. He jumps kind of high and grunts every time he lands.
That is the main character, and here is the story. I couldn't find a story in the game because I just couldn't play it that long, but I got some information on the story on a site outside of this one. His name is Ace, and the evil Commander Borf has stolen his girlfriend Kimberly. Borf is trying to enslave the Earth and it is up to your greasy little friend Ace to save the world and his girlfriend. An interesting story, no? No. Not at all. The producers couldn't even incorporate that into the beginning of the game. I just started playing and saw a fat blue freak shooting at me. Oh, well, some games can get off with a badly presented story but not this one.
A thing in this game that really bothered me that also happened quite often was that when you die, you have to restart the whole level. This game is really hard, so most people will die very often. It wouldn't bother me so much if it just started over at the level, but instead of doing that, it will show an FMV and then you will start the level over. Even if you are at the end of the level you will have to start over. There are a total of five lives, then you will get a game over. After the game over, you are given a rating based on your performance.
There is no way of saving the game, nor is there a password system. You play this game on one long sitting, with a couple of pain pills and a stress ball. Don't think that no saving/passwords makes the game bad though. There are lots of good games that you can't save or use passwords.
You are armed with some kind of laser, or at least that's what I've read. I still don't know how to use it or if there even is one, but it is obviously hard if I couldn't find out how to use it as of yet.
Graphics
The graphics actually weren't that bad. The main game play is closer to 3-D graphics than most Super Nintendo games, but the FMV's are horrible. I don't know why the main graphics were good, but the FMV's looked like they had come straight out of a Nintendo game. They were very blocky and weren't animated too well.
Sound
Yuck. There is no background music and hardly any sound effects so there isn't much to say here. The sound effects are pretty rough where there is some. The main sound effects are in FMV's and they are pretty bad. Lets just say the laughing sounds like farting. Get the idea?
Game Play
Not only is this the worst game I've every played, it is also the most aggravating, which I can support with many reasons. The first reason is that every time you play, an enemy will do the same attack in the exact same spot every time. This makes it a lot easier but not fun at all. The second, which really bothers me is that you only get one hit before you loose a life. If you fall down a hole, get shot or any other thing that can inflict damage to you, you will die. You won't keep going until you run out of lives, but the screen will go black then an FMV will come up that shows Borg, the boss, laughing and killing you. You will then start from the beginning of the level no matter how far you were. This is the worst aspect of the game. This feature is so annoying. If you play this game, this is why you will hate it. The game play is also very, very slow. So at the end of a level, you will have to do the whole, long process over again. *shudders*
Replay Value
None at all. The game play is horrible and very annoying so it makes the game play very low. It doesn't even have enough fun and replay value to finish the whole game. This game isn't worth playing, and that is the bottom line. Once you start playing the game, you will probably hate it, and never play again. That is what I did and I don't regret it and never will.
Overall
I mean, I kind of feel sorry for the fellows who made this game. They went down in history to me the worst game developers ever.
