1-Introduction
This is an Assist Trophy FAQ for Super Smash. Bros Brawl, which is for the Wii.
If you have any questions on assist trophies/characters or need help unlocking
them, then this is the FAQ for you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-Guide Development
These are the changes in each version of my guide and when they were completed.
(* infront of the version number means I submitted that version).
Version 0.25 completed on 7/5/2009:
Finished FAQ section and basic outline of guide.
Version 0.5 completed on 7/6/2009:
Finished Unlockables section (special thanks to GameFAQS contributors,
especially Jimbo the monkey). Also completed the list of assist trophies.
Version *1.0 completed on 7/7/2009:
Finished descriptions and advice on the list of assist trophies.
Version *1.1 completed on 7/9/2009:
Made a few changes here and there, such as new full-section dividers to help
avoid confusion with assist character section dividers, changing "assist
trophies" to "assist characters" in some cases to also avoid confusion, and
more.
Version *1.2 completed on 7/14/2009:
Made a couple changes in the guide. The most major one is the ASCII assist
trophy I added at the top of the guide. (Special thanks to smashbros.com for
providing a nice large assist trophy image to help me create it).
Version *1.5 completed on 8/14/2009:
Made many minor changes, but what really makes this update so major is the
addition a whole new section: the Trophy Text section.

3-FAQ
These are questions that will probably be asked a lot. Therefore, they will be
answered here.
Q: What is an assist trophy?
A: It's a special item that randomly appears in battle. It basically looks like
a trophy, only the figure on it is covered with a capsule so you can't tell
which character it is until it's activated. Once someone activates it, the
character will come out and help the activator (or activators if they are on a
team) in a certain way for a brief amount of time, such as by attacking the
other players. Well... most of them will anyway. Other times, the character
will do something strange that effects the battle. Assist characters can't be
attacked, but will disappear in a short time. (Except for Mr. Resetti, he lasts
pretty much the entire brawl, unless the set time is long, or you are doing a
very large stock match).
To answer this question the short way, an assist trophy is basically a
pokeball, except it's an assist trophy, you can't throw it, only one can be on
the screen at a time, and it contains characters besides pokemon that relate to
other things in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Q: How do I activate an assist trophy?
A: If you see one, simply press the button you use to pick up an item while
standing next to it. You need to stand still on the ground for just a small
amount of time, about a fraction of a second, to make the activation valid. If
you are knocked into the air, you will probably still be holding the assist
trophy. Just reach ground again that's clear of opponents and stand still.
Q: How many different assist characters are there?
A: As far as I'm concerned, there are 27 different assist characters. I checked
out the Smash Bros. DOJO (www.smashbros.com) after I completed the list, and I
can tell my list is complete.
Q: I'm right next to an opponent who grabed an assist trophy, what do I do?
A: IMMEDIATELY, and I mean IMMEDIATELY, either grab the opponent and throw them
upward or kick them upward. As they come down, kick them up again, and again.
Eventually, the assist trophy will fall out of their hands and you will be
able to activate it yourself.
Q: I'm not sure what a specific assist character does, can you help me?
A: Read the section for that assist character.
Q: I'm STILL not sure how an assist character works even after reading your
guide, can you please help me?
A: I might have made a mistake, catch me on the message boards the next time
you see me if you think this is the case.
Q: Wait, your guide mentions an assist character I have never seen before even
after opening a million assist trophies, is it rare or something?
A: Actually, there are some assist characters that you need to unlock first.
See the unlockables section for more details.
Either that, or it just happens that the character hasn't come out for you yet.
Q: Is it possible to NOT have assist trophies appear in battle?
A: Yes! Simply go to the rules then go to item switch and turn the assist
trophies off.
Q: Am I able to learn more about the assist characters in Nintendo's history?
A: Yes! Each assist character has their own trophy. If you unlock their trophy,
you can go to the gallery and look up their trophy for information. You can see
the Trophy Text section in this guide to read the information these trophies
give.
Q: Can't you add the rarity of each assist character?
A: Sorry, I can't. Not only is it hard work, but I feel that every assist
character has roughly the same rarity. I think this, because there are some I
don't get for a long time, yet I sometimes get them a couple times in a row. I
would say that every assist character has pretty much an equal rarity.
Q: In the Trophy Text section, why is "Assist Trohpy" listed before "Andross"?
N comes before S!
A: Which deserves to come first? The Assist Trophy, which is the basic root of
this guide, or Andross, a simple assist character? I think the Assist Trophy
does.
Q: Help! I’m trapped inside a box! How do I get out?
A: Please, ask questions that involve my FAQ or the assist trophies/characters
in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
If you have any other questions, feel free to catch me on the Super Smash Bros.
Brawl message boards or perhaps other message boards if you see me.

4-Assist Characters
This is a list of all the assist characters in the game, what they do, and
advice for you if you aren't the activator or on the activator's team. The
assist characters are listed in A-Z order by name.
(*'s around the name of the assist character means you will have to unlock them
first before they will start appearing. There are a total of 6 assist
characters you will have to do this with. See the unlockables section for
information on how to unlock them).
(* in front of the advice means that the advice is for activators as well)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andross
Description: This mad scientist from Star Fox, (who looks more like a giant
pixelized head), will go behind the stage and center in on pretty much where
the non-activators are and shoot three large sets of flat squares toward you,
and they hurt quite badly. They add 12% to your status.
Advice for non-activators: Keep moving around, but don't retrace your steps!
Also, if there are other non-activators, make sure you know where they are, as
Andross may shoot squares toward them as well, slightly affecting your path.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Barbara*
Description: This female guitar player from Daigasso! Band Brothers will come
out and immediately strum her electric guitar seven times, (about two times a
second), and each time she strums it, a burst of energy will surround her that
hurts all non-activators. The second-to-last burst of energy takes up slightly
more space, and the last burst of energy takes up even more space. The first
six strums add 5% to your status while the last strum adds 15%.
Advice for non-activators: She doesn't move at all, her bursts just get bigger
near the end, so stay as far away as possible and you should be fine. (You
should stay as far away as possible from pretty much every assist character
actually).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Devil
Description: This little devil (no seriously), from Devil World makes the
screen scroll in different directions! The side he points to is the side that
will move towards him (for example, if he points to the left, the screen will
scroll to the right). Once he disappears, the screen will go back to normal.
*Advice for non-activators: Don't panic! Part of the stage is still in
plain-sight. Just stay in this part of the stage and keep fighting, you should
be fine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Wright
Description: The mayor's assistant from SimCity (that's Dr. Wright) will come
out of the capsule and a couple seconds later, have a building pop out of the
ground infront of him that does major damage if you are standing right where it
pops out. He may turn around when he is activated, and his building may pop out
on other platforms depending on where he is, (for example, if there is a
platform above the ground infront of him, the building will probably pop out of
that platform depending on its height).
Advice for non-activators: The building isn't that wide, just stay away and you
should be fine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Excitebikes
Description: Several bike riders from Excitebike will ride across the stage. If
they hit you, 4% will be added to your status. Some will fall off the stage,
while others will be smart, and turn around before falling off the stage. Some
are blue, some are purple, and some are normal-colored. Eventually, they will
all fall off the stage or disappear.
Advice for non-activators: They aren't very big. If you are on the same floor
as them, stay in the air so they can't reach you. The main goal here is to stay
away!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Gray Fox*
Description: This character from Metal Gear Solid will run to a non-activator
and swing his weapon rapidly. He will probably also use the occasional high
jump... along with his weapon! He might even use the very high double-jump!
Advice for non-activators: Stay away! If you get caught at the side of the
stage, try jumping over him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hammer Bro
Description: This hammer thrower from Super Mario. Bros will throw many hammers
infront of him that add 6% to your status, sometimes one at a time, sometimes
two rapidly, sometimes a few quickly together, and... well I think you get the
idea. He can also jump, and even jump and throw hammers at the same time!
Advice for non-activators: His hammers aren't thrown very far, and he can only
stand and jump, not walk or run around. Just stay away and he shouldn't get
you.
NOTE: Hammer Bro also appears as an enemy in the Subspace Emissary. His hammers
can be thrown at different angles however, so be extra careful in the Subspace
Emissary.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Helirin
Description: This strange little contraption from Kuru Kuru Kururin will simply
float and rotate. It's like a seperate platform, only it rotates and moves
slowly.
*Advice for non-activators: I don't see much point in this assist character. I
would just ignore it if it appears. You can use it as a seperate platform if
you want, but overall, it's pretty much pointless.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Infantry & Tanks*
Description: These are soldiers and tanks are from Famicon Wars. Some tanks and
soldiers will slowly go left while some will slowly go right. If they hit any
walls or anything like that, they will turn around. The amount of tanks and
soldiers going in the one direction will probably be uneven with the amount
going the other direction. There will be a total of about five or six, maybe
more, maybe less. Soldiers will shoot bullets that add 3% to your status, while
tanks will shoot bullets that add 10%! They will keep going until they fall off
the stage.
Advice for non-activators: Stay away from them and the ground if they are on
the same floor as you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Isaac*
Description: This Golden Sun character will stand where he was activated, and
direct a giant hand to fly either straight left or straight right, depending on
where the non-activators are. He will do this three times before disappearing.
If the hand touches you, you won't gain %, but you will be flying around as
they hand tries to push you off the stage.
Advice for non-activators: If you are on the same level as him, and a hand is
coming towards you, just jump over it, (unless you are trapped, then you are in
a bad situation). Don't let the hand touch you, or you will bounce around as
the hand pushes you, making it difficult to recover.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeff
Description: This young, knowledgeable boy from Earthbound will set up four
normal homing rockets that aim for the non-activators and add 10% to your
status and one more rocket that is very slow, but is even more powerful and
adds 12% to your status. Sometimes, he might do the same thing one more time
before he disappears!
Advice for non-activators: Stay as far away as possible. If the rockets are
coming toward you as you are standing on the ground, try roll dodging just
before they reach you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jill
Description: This girl from Drill Dozer will ride her drill dozer across the
stage. If she runs into a non-activator, they will keep getting drilled with %
being added to their status until they get out. If she hits a wall, she will
get stuck for a second or two, then turn around. If she reaches the edge of the
stage, she will turn around and ride across the stage again until she reaches
the other edge, and the cycle repeats until time is up. If she ends up on a
platform that leads to the borders of the stage if she falls off, she will just
ride back and forth on the platform instead. She will eventually jump off of
the stage when time is up. Sometimes, she might have her vehicle jump up and
down as she is riding it!
Advice for non-activators: Stay away as much as you can. If she happens to trap
you at the side of the stage, simply jump over her. Even if she is jumping, you
should still be able to jump over her with your double-jump and your recovery
move.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kat & Ana
Description: These two kindergarteners from Wario Ware Inc. will fly across the
screen at high speed and meet eachother at what I like to call, the "center
point", because it's the point at where they meet, and it's at the center of
their flight. The center point depends on where the non-activators are. They
will then fly across the screen a total of eight times with different angles,
and if one of them hits you, she will add 10% to your status, and if they BOTH
hit you, they will add 20% to your status. Be careful, on the eighth flight,
they can, and most likely will change their center point. However, they will
stop their flight once they meet during the eight flight, so it sort of makes
up for it.
Advice for non-activators: Stay as far away from the center point as you can,
and on the eighth flight, move around a little bit so that they won't get you
with their new center point.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knuckle Joe
Description: This martial artist from Kirby Super Star will perform rapid
punches, uppercuts, shoot out blasts of energy, and a few jumps.
Advice for non-activators: Stay away from him! Also, if you get caught at the
side of the stage, try jumping over him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lakitu & Spinies
Description: Lakitu from Super Mario Bros. will float up in his cloud to the
top of the stage and throw a couple (or maybe even few), spinies, which can
really hurt, even when they are walking on the stage. Lakitu will disappear
once the spinies are thrown, and the spinies will eventually walk off the
stage.
Advice for non-activators: It turns out you can kill Lakitu! If he's not
holding a spiny (because it would hurt if he did), you can perform an attack on
him that will knock him out of the sky! However, any thrown spinies will
remain.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Little Mac
Description: This boxer from Punch-Out!! will come out and perform hard-hitting
punches, and also do some upper-cuts. He even jumps occasionally. If you are
far away from him, but on the same floor, he can charge at you in high speed
and quickly attack you. This boxer may be small, but he is fierce! Light
punches add 5% to your status, stronger punches 15%, and uppercuts 25%.
Advice for non-activators: Stay away from him and the ground. If you are caught
at the side of the stage, try jumping over him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyn
Description: This young, female swordsman from Fire Emblem will come out and
focus for a little bit. The screen will darken a little bit, and soon she will
teleport right to the closest non-activator and deal 30% with her sword skills.
Advice for non-activators: Try not to be the closest one to her, but if you end
up being the closest, or you are the only non-activator, roll-dodge as much as
you can. Roll-dodges, and other dodges, will keep her from hitting you. The
more you roll-dodge, the less chance she has of hitting you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metroid
Description: It's almost the same as the original Metroid, this creature will
float around, and try to attach to you, but it won't suck up your life energy.
Instead, it will add % to your status! 2% is added at a time, and is added
constantly (about 10% a second!) until you get the metroid off.
Advice for non-activators: You might just want to avoid it to make sure it
doesn't get you in the first place. I'm not saying to go crazy with your
controller, but if the metroid does attach to you, keep pushing buttons and
moving your character around until it detaches. Don't do it wildly though, just
play with the buttons a little bit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Resetti
Description: This mole from Animal Crossing will give a random speech in a
speech bubble that takes up a majority of the top half of the screen. His
speech lasts quite awhile, which means it will probably go on to the end of the
battle, unless the match ends up being several minutes long for various
reasons.
*Advice for non-activators: His speech bubble is mostly transparent, and the
battle is still going. So no matter what he says, ignore his speech and keep
fighting!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nintendog
Description: This little dog from Nintendogs will come out of the capsule and
disappear. Where is the dog now? It's infront of the screen! Its giant head and
body take up the middle part of the screen and move around a little bit. Your
view of a majority of the screen will be blocked for about 10-15 seconds.
*Advice for non-activators: Try to ignore the dog as much as possible. If you
CANNOT see yourself, try to remember where you were before your view was
blocked so you won't lose yourself, and if you CAN see yourself, keep fighting!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Ray Mk III*
Description: This robot from Custom Robo will shoot four green bullets that add
4% to your status. They all go at slightly different angles, but roughly the
same direction. All four will go left or right at different angles depending on
which way he is facing. He will probably also shoot explosive bullets that
don't go to far, but are pretty powerful and add 12% to your status. He can
also fly around and change directions.
Advice for non-activators: Stay as far away as you possibly can, and also try
to stay as high in the air as you can, as his bullets go pretty far, but also
in a downward angle. This one is a very difficult one to dodge.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saki
Description: This member of the rescue team from Sin and Punishment will shoot
straight bullets with his weapon, he might also jump and shoot at a downward
angle, and if you are close enough, he will also use his sword! His bullets add
3% to your status.
Advice for non-activators: Stay away from him and the ground if he is on the
same level as you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Samurai Goroh
Description: This tough guy from F-Zero holds a sword and will run back and
forth wildly swinging it. He will also use the occasional jump while swinging
his sword. It may look silly, but it does some heavy damage!
Advice for non-activators: Stay away as much as you can! Also, if you get
caught at the side of the stage, take an attempt to jump over him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Shadow*
Description: This rival of Sonic the Hedgehog will come out and use "Chaos
Control", which means all the players except for the activator will be slower
than usual for a brief amount of time (about seven seconds).
Advice for non-activators: If the activator is going after you, use an attempt
to grab them or a strong attack and time it carefully, (when there is a little
bit of distance in between you and the activator while they are charging at
you).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stafy
Description: This little star from Densetsu no Stafy will walk around a little
bit and do a couple of twirls, which add a little % to your status. He can also
change directions.
Advice for non-activators: It turns out this assist character can be attacked!
If you attack him, he will probably just bounce around a little bit though. I
would just recommend staying away, as you may get tangled in a twirl instead of
actually attacking him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tingle
Description: This strange character from the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
will do one of several different things:
A: He will dance around in flowers, and the camera will be zoomed onto the
activator as the battle continues, making things difficult for non-activators.
B: He will dance in fire, and all players will get the same effect they do when
they eat the fiery curry item.
C: He will dance around with hammers around him, meaning that a bunch of
hammers (and maybe even golden hammers!) will start appearing. They can be used
by any player.
D: He will dance around with banana peels around him, meaning that all
non-activators will trip every time they attempt to walk.
E: He will float up in the air with a bunch of balloons. From what I have
heard, and as far as I'm concerned, this doesn't do anything.
Advice for non-activators:
A: Make sure you remember where you were so you don't accidently fall off the
stage!
*B: I would just avoid the other players if I were you. You will probably end
up getting fried if you try fighting a fiery person, even though you are fiery.
*C: If there are golden hammers, go for those! If there aren't, you can get a
regular hammer, but beware of ones that have their hammer-heads fall off!
D: Attack the activator if they are right next to you. Otherwise, you might as
well stay where you are, because if you trip, you will probably get hurt by the
activator.
*E: I don't think this even does anything. Just pretend that the assist trophy
was never activated.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Waluigi
Description: This partner of Wario will come out with a tennis racket, but he
will scarcely use it. Instead, he will have his foot do several stomps at a
time, and he will even jump occasionally, and as he falls down, he will stomp
the air several times trying to get you. If he DOES stomp you, you will get
pounded into the ground and he will use a special kick attack that will send
you flying. On rare occasions, he might swing his tennis racket at you!
Advice for non-activators: Just stay as far away as possible. If you are caught
at the side of the stage, try jumping over him. If you do end up getting
pounded into the ground, play with the buttons a little bit (not wildly), and
you might just escape in time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5-Unlockables
These are the assist trophies that you need to unlock first, along with how to
unlock them. There are six in all. (I would like to thank GameFAQS/Gamespot
member Jimbo the monkey for submitting these unlockables, but please note that
I put these into my own words as much as possible).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Barbara
How to unlock: Unlock atleast 25 CDs.
Advice: Check out the Challenges section in the Vault. It contains many CDs
along with how to unlock them. If all else fails, play a few brawls and pick up
any CDs you see. They may be uncommon, but it helps a little bit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gray Fox
How to unlock: Unlock Snake as a fighter.
Advice: You can either unlock Snake by getting far enough in the Subspace
Emissary, (he doesn't take to long to reach), or brawl 15 times on Shadow Moses
Island. Both of them sound simple to me. If you do 15 times on Shadow Moses
Island, set the time to one minute, so brawls take a shorter amount of time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Infantry & Tanks
How to unlock: Play 300 Brawls.
Advice: I don't think I can give you any help with this, except by noting the
fact that you don't need any real-life people to play a brawl, you can simply
brawl with CPUs. You probably already knew that though. Also, you may want to
set the time to one minute, so brawls take a shorter amount of time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Isaac
How to unlock: Play 200 Brawls.
Advice: See the Infantry & Tanks (unlockable) section.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ray MK III
How to unlock: Play 100 Brawls.
Advice: See the Infantry & Tanks (unlockable) section.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shadow
How to unlock: Unlock Sonic as a fighter.
Advice: You can either reach him in the Subspace Emissary, (but beware, you
don't get him until right before the end!), or by playing 300 brawls. Both take
awhile to reach, but you will unlock him eventually!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6-Trophy Text
For the sake of completion, I decided to add a seperate section for what the
trophies of these assist characters say, along with what games are listed for
the characters' appearances. Now you don't have to unlock the trophies like I
had to. Hurray!
Also, a majority of these trophies are unlocked by simply collecting them from
the coin launcher, all-star mode, etc. However, you might notice that there are
five assist chracters in this section that have <>'s around their name. This
means that you will have to unlock their trophy a different way. The method of
unlocking them is listed in a NOTE at the end of the assist character's
section.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Assist Trophy
Games: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
Information: A capsule that contains characters who will help you out in
battle. You won't know who's in the capsule until you open it. It may be
someone everyone knows or someone who's a bit of a mystery. The majority of
these chracters are invulnerable, so attacking them is not an option. You know
what that means, right? RUN!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andross
Games: Star Fox (SNES), Star Fox 64 (N64)
Information: A brilliant scientist formerly employed by the Cornerian Army. He
took his research too far, and the disastrous results labeled him a Level 1
offender, resulting in his banishment to the nearby planet Venom. After
building a base and declaring himself emperor, he swore he would rule the Lylat
system. Thanks to Team Star Fox's heroism, the madman has yet to achieve this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Barbara*
Games: Daigasso! Band Brothers (DS, Japan Only), Master of Illusion (DS)
Information: The manager of the music store GB Music in Waruwaru Town--her real
name is Barbara the Bat. She leads the player through the game, showing her
arrogant attitude as she cracks the whip at others but pampers herself. Her
little brother's name is Tingtin the Bat. By the way, the "GB" in the name of
her store stands for "Great Barbara," NOT "Game Boy."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Devil
Games: Devil World (NES, Japan Only)
Information: A devil who wields serious power in Devil World. In the game, the
devil floats above the maze and commands by pointing. When it gives orders, its
cyclopean minions turn cracks that scroll the maze in different directions.
When Tamagon, your character in the game, places all the stage's books into a
hole, the devil turns into a bat and flies away. It's quite striking, no?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Wright
Games: SimCity (SNES)
Information: A hardworking assistant to the city mayor. He has distinctive hair
and spectacles and a dapper moustache. Dr. Wright has a comprehensive knowledge
of city government and is happy to give you tips to keep your city running
smoothly. In the game, he tracks your city status and gives you gifts. There
was a character reminiscent of him in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<Excitebikes>
Games: Excitebike (NES), Excitebike 64 (N64)
Information: High-performance motocross bikes that handle massive jumps with
ease. Using turbo on these beauties gives a speed boost but also causes the
engine's internal temperature to rise. Overuse turbo, and the bikes overheat
and shut down. The engines can be cooled by running over certain marks on the
track. Excitebikes cap off every race with an undeniably awesome wheelie.
NOTE: This trophy is unlocked by unlocking all the masterpieces.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<*Gray Fox*>
Games: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GC)
Information: An enigmatic soldier with great physical and combat skills.
Calling himself "Deepthroat" and equipped with an enhanced environmental
camouflage suit, he dedicated his life to fighting Snake. In a twist of fate,
Gray Fox ends up protecting his sworn rival from Metal Gear REX. Long ago, Gray
Fox fought Snake in Zanzibarland.
NOTE: You unlock Gray Fox's trophy by clearing Target Smash Level 5 with every
character. Special thanks to GameFaqs users on the message boards for pointing
