*1: About The FAQ/Version Changes

This is an FAQ designed for the character Biollante in Godzilla: Unleashed for
the Wii. My goal is to provide general strategies for the character.
These will be useful for going through the main game as her for the first time.
Also, I will attempt to give insight into using her against human opponents.
That will constitute more detailed(by the monster) strategies.

In any case, I hope this helps anyone interested in such a strange monster.

1.00: First Version for GameFaqs(12-19-2007)

1.05: Fixed names of certain moves. Biollante’s weaknesses/resistances/stats
are now represented more accurately. In game description added. Additional
details added in "General Strategy" and "Beating Biollante"(pertaining to Rush
mostly). Typos, if found, fixed. Disclaimer added("legal" stuff). 1/1/08

*2: Biollante: Who is She, and how do I unlock Her?

Biollante is a large plant monster in the game. What makes her unique
among fighters in the game is how she can 'link' attacks. If you have
never played as her, this can be somewhat difficult to explain. Due to
that, I will try and simplify it as much as possible.

She has three sections of her body: Front Vines, Rear Vines and Body.
Do a great degree, described more below, she can move each one of those
sections independently. That is, while attacking with her body, she can
also attack using front and rear vines. These are not pre-built combos
like in other fighting games, but moves linked how you want them to. In
so doing, the game gives you a great deal of flexibility in how you want
to plan your attack strategy. This is, of course, the point of that guide.

To Unlock Biollante, play the level "Rumble in the Surf" as an Earth Defender.
On the level there is a building covered with green gas and vines. Destroy it,
and come back to the level later as an Earth Defender. There should be a
level called "Biollante" that you can select. Defeat Biollante in that level,
finish the game, and you have unlocked her! She costs 30,000 points.

In Game Description:
Biollante is a terrifying example of mankind's ability to unleash horrors upon
the world. The result of anti-monster mutagen experiments gone horrible awry,
Biollante is a patchwork mix of human, plant, and monster DNA. Biollante's
sheer height and mass make her the largest known monster by a fair margin, and
if it were not for her limited mobility there is little doubt that she would
have established herself already as Earth's most powerful monster. As a
mutant, Biollante holds no special allegiance toward any of her genetic
kindred - though she does seem to harbor special animosity towards Godzilla.
Biollante's quick-extending vines and corrosive poison spray make her a threat
at any range, while her massive jaws and incredible strength make her deadly
up close.

*4: General Strategy

Biollante, despite her tremendous size and health, is a ranged character. She
is best when fighting her enemies from a distance. Up close, they can keep
attacking and, due to her great bulk, she has no chance of dodging them. This
puts her at a disadvantage that is difficult to go against. Fortunately, she
has a vast array of long attacks to prevent the problems I described from
happening. Remember: she is basically a big punching bag. It is almost
impossible to prevent her from taking damage, but your 'massive damage' should
be enough to compensate for that.

A note on linking first: Biollante's AB moves should be the start of the
linking attack. It works better that way for your own defense, and provides
an additional attack to boot. I recommend starting all attacks with one of
them.

Her Vine Cross, 'Left' or 'Right', is the backbone of her war engine. It has
tremendous range and, assuming both vines hit, knocks down the enemy. This
provides breathing room so you can set up another attack. I am not saying to
"spam" the attack, but it does provide a powerful deterrent for enemies. It
will keep most enemies at bay while you lurch forward. I should note here an
interesting fact about Vine Cross: after you rush and run into an enemy, you
can immediately use the Vine Cross attack. If your opponent did not guard
against the rush, the vines will strike him/her and knock them straight to
ground. The supposedly 'immobile' Biollante actually, when played in this
matter, can become difficult to stop.

The Vine Assault attack is dangerous at the start of the battle(especially
if you are fighting a big monster like Biollante or King Ghidorah). Otherwise,
you should only use it if your opponent is flying high in front of you(use
Vine Crack, also, to stop enemies, like Rodan, that want to float/fly near
you). These specific moves were given to her for that purpose: make sure to
use them! In addition, if you 'jump' with Biollante, she will be much higher
off the ground. Due to this, she can use her deadly 'B' attacks(Mega Bite,
and Stalk Swing) for major damage. These moves will force airborne enemies
to the ground, where you can dispatch them easily.

Stalk Swing is there to stop enemies that want to circle you(MOGUERA and
the like). If you time it well, you will hit their backside and send them to
the ground. If that happens, hammer them with Head Smash and link into a
Heavy Vine Attack. After a few hits of this, your enemies will think twice
about trying to exploit her plodding nature.

Biollante's Beam, despite looking very strong, is quite weak. It hits certain
monsters for extra damage(Orga, King Ghidorah, Varan), but it is less useful
than simply attacking in melee. Try and always have an energy cell ready
though--you need to stop other powerful beams(like Baragon's) from leeching
away your valuable health. Also of note is that you can still use "AB" attacks
whole shooting your beam. Due to modification of the Wiimote, you likely will
not be able to aim well, but you can perhaps start using your beam, trick
the enemy into trying to stop you, then shoot out Vine Cross.
Tricks like this make Biollante interesting to play as.

Your Quick Burrow move should be used as a last resort. It leaves you
vulnerable from the backside and prevents you from using most of your good
moves. Vine Twist, Vine Crack and Vine Assault can be use to guard your
back, but you are probably better off only burrowing if you *really* need
to. An example would be to dodge Mecha-King Ghidorah's Tasers or the
Absolute Zero Cannon. Generally speaking, you have better ways(Rush +
Vine Cross) to get past enemies. This might seem cool, but it leaves you
too vulnerable to warrant frequent use.

Primarily, you will want to link(in this order) Vine Cross Left, Mega Bite
and Heavy Vine Slap together. This provides a relatively powerful barrier
that will deter most onward attacks. If your enemy(like the AI) comes in
blindly, they will be quickly shot down in a torrent of whips and thorns. A
Health Cell will be easily drained and victory will be nearly at hand.

As a final note, if your opponent gets 'Parry Happy', so to speak, remember to
use Biollante's powerful grab(*NEVER* use it if multiple monsters are around
though as it takes too long). This will, perhaps, catch them off guard and
deal a sizeable amount of damage. Try and follow-up with Head Slam.

*5: Parry: Friend and Foe

Parrying is a new concept added in this game. Just to refresh your memory, you
parry by holding Z(Guard) and shaking the Wiimote before an enemy hits you with
a 'power' attack(any attack that requires Wiimote modification--ie, ^+AB). If
you time this correctly, you will cause the enemy to become stunned. Now,
with this moment, you should attack with a powerful melee attack(something
like Vine Cross or Head Slam). Most enemies will try and keep attacking you
so that your slow speed will be a disadvantage. With intelligent use of
parrying, however, you can turn your enemies’ strategy against them.

There is, however, a difficulty ingrained within the parry system: since your
'quick' moves(Vine Jab and Slap) are so slow, you will primarily be using your
own 'power' attacks. This leaves Biollante wide open, for an intelligent
opponent, to be exploited by parry. To answer this threat, you must vary
which attacks you are going to use. If they think you are going to use the
fairly slow Head Slam, attack with a quicker Heavy Vine Slap. Basically, try
and keep your strategy non-transparent. Vary up which moves you are going to
use(spamming Vine Cross, for instance, means you will be parried).

I was under the impression earlier that Biollante's Rush could *not* be
parried: I was mistaken. She, like any character, can be stopped from
rushing. However, due to its surprising speed, your Rush is still likely to
catch your foe off guard. Due to this, it is still worth using when(or if)
your opponent begins to parry with zeal.

One note though: you cannot parry 'energy attacks'(Destroyah's 'Horn Katana'
Mecha Godzilla 2's 'Plasma' attacks are such). Unfortunately, these are
fairly long ranged assaults that can potentially break past your defenses.
You must be sure to keep your own assault going to prevent them from exploiting
your size(you cannot effectively dodge the 'energy attacks). Keep them on the
defensive if they use the moves often; that is the only advice to give.

If, however, your enemy has the impeccable fighting style of Ryunosuke Tsukue,
then something more drastic must be done. Your powerful grab has a fairly
long range--be sure to use it if they come in towards you. This is
ill-advised for a multiplayer round due to the length of the attack, but it is
effective in a normal duel. Your beam, too, can be used as a good weapon. Of
special interest here is that Vine Cross and other attacks can *still* be used
while you are attacking with your breath. Only a very foolish enemy would
continue using parry while being attacked like this. They will be drawn out,
and then you can strike with the massive power that Biollante has.

If I had to distill my advice down, it would be this simple: parry their
attacks when they go crazy, but make sure to vary your attacks enough so that
you do not become overly obvious. If you follow this advice, you should be
able to handle most any opponent.

*6: Specific Strategies

This section covers, to the best of my ability, what Biollante should do
against "problem monsters". Anyone not covered in this section can probably
be beaten using the concepts outlined in the General Strategy Section. It is
also assumed that your opponent is not the AI: after all, Biollante can walk
all over the AI with little to no difficulty.

Baragon: The main problem here is his beam. It is already *very* strong, and
you being weak to it does not help. In addition, his small size makes it so
your Vine Cross attack will miss him on occasion. This can be problematic due
to the slow nature of your attacks.

However, there are ways to stop even an intelligent Baragon opponent.

First, make sure--and I stress this--to have energy available at all times.
If he tries to use his beam, you have to be able to stop it. If you let it
hit you for any length of time, your health advantage can(and likely will) be
taken away.

Make sure to use Head Slam and Heavy Vine Slam to move him off the ground.
They should be enough to make him think twice about coming so close. Make
sure not to forget that your rush is very powerful against such a small
opponent: push your weight around and make him sorry. Biollante is quite
fast when she needs to be, and you can make quick work of such a small
fighter.

If Baragon decides to run and hide, use Vine Cross and Vine Assault
to bring him back into the battle. He can move faster and is a more nimble
monster, but your huge health should allow you to win in the long run. Just
keep energy ready for that beam, and everything should be fine.

Megaguirus: The problem here is speed. She is incredibly fast and can slip
in past your defensive barrier easily(her rush alone can do it). You cannot
effectively halt her advance if she wants to fight close, but you can try and
make her suffer for coming in.

Your rush should push her back far enough so you can Vine Cross her(as
described above). If not, use Snap Up to try and push her away. Remember
that you, at heart, are a ranged character, and need to exploit your skills
to that end. Just keep pushing her back, and victory should be yours.

When she enters 'Hyper Mode', I suggest either grabbing her, burrowing, or
rushing into her. The effect does not last long, so you should be okay.

Destroyah: Ouch. If you ask me, this guy is the best character in the game.
You cannot parry his Horn Katana and it will butcher someone like Biollante.
In truth, I have never been able to beat an intelligent human who uses
Destroyah. The best you can hope for is to Vine Cross him and *force* him
out of close range. An effective strategy that Destroyah might try is, in
so many words, 'Flinging' himself at you while using his Horn Katana. Try
and anticipate when, and where, he will use this. Mega Bite and your Rush
are relatively effective at stopping this. I offer no promises though. If
he gets in, he *WILL* slaughter you. I cannot offer much advice beyond that.
Keep the Vine Cross going, and hope for the best.

Varan: This guy likes to hit, hit, and hit again. His natural speed, and that
his attacks meld nicely together, means that he can strike for a large amount
of damage quite fast. He can get past your defenses easily and then, once
there, hurt you badly.

There is, oddly enough, one thing going in your favor here: he is weak against
your beam. Normally I would not advise it, and even now you should not make
it the main part of your strategy, but your beam is useful. If he decides to
glide away and leave you, give him a few shots in the bum to remember you.
It works well enough, and you can even try and use Vine Crack or Vine Assault
to add insult to injury.

If in melee, apply the same ideas that you used against Megaguirus: rush, then
use the Vine Cross. Grabbing, in addition, complements the strategy if your
foe likes to parry too much. Vary up your "B" attacks and you will be able to
make him suffer.

Krystalak: His energy attacks, not the beam, are quite dangerous. He can leap
towards you and use his "Crystal Heart"(A+B+C+Z) and strike you for a great
amount of damage(try and guard this rather than hit him in midair as he comes
in). His "Z" attack, "Tail Blast", is dangerous as you have no way of dodging
it. Make him suffer for using it though: either rush or Vine Cross. His
guard has to come down when he uses it, so you should be able to hit him for
some damage. Trading health like this works to your advantage because you
have so much health.

Mainly you have to watch out for him flinging himself past your defenses and
hitting you with attacks then retreating. Try and think ahead of what he is
going to do(easier said than done). If you can time it, Mega Bite him while
he is in flight if you do not think he will use the "Crystal Heart". Although
that move makes him invulnerable *while* he is using it, there is a window at
the start of the attack when you can attack. Learn that time, and he will
have to fight you in a fair(melee) fight.

Once that happens, use the strategies outlined above.

Mecha-King Ghidorah: Those tasers cause all sorts of problems. They prevent
you from saving your beam to block the Gravity Beams and, more importantly,
the defensive attacks you need are disabled while you are stunned. The best
strategy is to never let up for an instance. The tasers recharge every 30
seconds, so he will always have a window to hit you. You are not afforded
that luxury. Keep attacking, and use your size to your advantage. Keep him
on the defensive and you should be fine. If he sets the tone of the battle,
then you do not stand a good chance of winning.

Orga: Watch out for the "Paralyzing Goo". Although he cannot grab you, his
powerful "Claw Uppercut" is more than enough to warrant me talking about him.
Oddly enough, you can prevent him from doing this by using your beam(since he
he is weak against it, he will need to save energy to stop you). Turn the
tables on him, while still following the ideas above, and you should be fine.
Your natural bulk is more than a match for him.

*7: Beating Biollante

This is not a guide on how to beat the AI Biollante. She is quite stupid and
needs no explanation. Here I hope to provide an answer to the strategies I
outlined above. This way nobody calls foul or anything. Biollante *is* very
good, but there are ways of getting in close to hurt her.

An effective strategy to fight her is, of all things, to jump towards her
while attacking. Shake the Nunchuck to jump while moving towards her, then
choose an attack that will hit her. This allows you, for the most part, to
dodge the more dangerous attacks(like Vine Cross). Since she is weakest up
close, this works well enough. Still, it is not a 'win all' strategy.
After all, if Biollante times a counter well(like Mega Bite), she can hit you
in mid-air and make you look rather stupid. The tactic should be used when
you think it could work. It requires tact, but it does tend to mess around
with people the first time.

Since, for the most part, Biollante's best moves are her 'knock-down' moves,
a clever opponent can choose to parry them. Time your parry well though: it
could work, but you might end up flat on your back(never a good thing). This
is another instance where tact, of all things, is needed to come out on top.
Do not make it a one dimensional strategy, but incorporate it into your normal
routine.

Biollante suffers due to her low mobility. So long as you are not someone
like Space Godzilla, you should try and move side to side against her. She
will probably use Stalk Swing to counter this, but you can parry this and
then go in for the attack again and again. Mobility is the key, so try and
make her attacks miss outright. This can be hard, but it has its upsides.

If you manage to knock Biollante down, keep attacking! Her large body pushes
her high off the ground. Due to this, many attacks can still hit her while
she is momentarily incapacitated. This provides a boon for other characters
that need to hit her with all they have got quickly.  Time is *her* strength;
try and make the round go quickly. She has enough health to last, and you
probably do not.

Also, if you are playing with items on, try and get those before she does.
Although her rush is fast, it is cumbersome to use on certain stages(like
New York). Try and parry it if possible. Keep your health and energy high
so you are able to out battle her for the limited resources.

Remember, also, to *not* use your beam while standing still. If you do, she
will probably use Vine Cross(or a like move) to strike you. She comes out
ahead. If possible, use a C 'Tap' move(like Godzilla's Fireball) for a quick
stun. Your beam *can* be useful, but you need to time it well.
