IIRC you sometimes (randomly) drop the hammer after being hit.

I think that if you press the grab/throw button while you're reeling in the air after being hit far, you can throw the hammer.

If you're runnign around swinging it, you can't. If you get hit far enough into the air, you might be able to. Plus, if you're at a high enough percentage and get hit, you'll drop it that way too.

Spam the grab button when you are knocked away.

On the gamecube controller, It's Z+A.
On the Wiimote, it's A+B.
On the Classic controller, I don't know, I don't have this controller

If you're in hitstun you can mash the Grab button (it's Z on gcn controller, NOT z+a). This is useful if you get knocked off a platform and can't make it back, since you can't recover with the Hammer. However, if the Golden Hammer is dropped or knocked away, it can't be retrieved.

Massive impact, enough to knock you off the stage is the only way I know, but, why would you want to drop it in the first place?

Sometimes after hit, you lose items, including hammers.

Wait, are they discarding it like you can with any weapen, container, etc. at the last second, or actually dropping it by force?

When you are falling in the air you can air dodge and you will let it go.

Well i would say just get hit hard!

You can drop the hammer without getting hit. I've done it a few times. How, I don't know. I pressed alot of buttons.

If you get hard enough, you'll drop it. (Not necessarily hard enough to knock you out of the fight.)

YOU can't drop it. Just battered enough.

Other than getting hit really hard there is absolutely no way to drop the hammer. Either of them.
