statusNo, I'm sorry to say that you start off with all characters. However, you can make Mii's according to which event you want them to compete. I not quite sure how this works but the FAQ by KalleGZ:) details what specifications the Miis need for certain events. (www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/file/938798/53803). I found it quite useful.
There is speculation that other characters can be unlocked by getting the WR (World Record) in every event. But it is incorrect. You have what you started with I'm afraid.
No you cannot, the only unlockable characters are adding new Miis, and they are unlocked by you adding them. But you could make a Mii look like Mario or Peach or Rosalina if you're good.
