Question from Vermineater

What is considered the best vehicle and character in competitive play?

I've heard people say bikes and heavy characters, but who's the best overall?

Competitive play, I would assume you mean on Wi-Fi against 'top' players.

Under those circumstances, the best choice for vehicle is almost unanimously the Bullet Bike. It's the slowest of the top three most favored bikes(Bullet Bike, Mach Bike, Flame Runner/Bowser Bike), but it has high enough acceleration to offset that minor weakness a majority of the time.

Some would say that pure speed is the name of the game in competitive play, which would point you directly to Funky Kong on the Flame Runner(Bowser Bike). But again, in competitive play, the racers know better how to utilize their items, so acceleration will play a big role, as well as Item Defense. Again, you may just use the standstill mini-turbo to offset the weak acceleration stat, but what if you take a light bump into a corner? That slows your speed to the middle ground, where you could stop and SSMT, or just smash the accelerator and reach top speed again in the same amount of time. Even a lightweight character can push you into a wall if you hug your corners like you should be.

And what about when you get bumped during a wheelie? Acceleration is a major bonus in this case as well. Spin out on a banana? Do that one time in a 'pro' race and you could drop 3-4 places real quick using the Flame Runner(Bowser Bike).

The Mach Bike is just the middle of the road option. It's acceleration is high enough that bananas aren't so much of a threat, but anything that brings you to a stop would put you in a position to do the SSMT again.

The off-road choices like Dolphin Dasher and Magikruiser are viable, but they don't provide enough bonuses to keep up with Mach Bikes and Flame Runners. There are too few courses with too few off-road shortcuts to take advantage of so the most you would usually do is keep up with Bullet Bikes and items would be your savior versus the other two.

As for characters, it makes little difference. The stat boosts are extremely minor in the grand scheme of things. Of course, Baby Daisy is the near-unanimous choice for top players, since the Bullet Bike has great acceleration, but a couple points of speed makes for such a slight advantage it's pretty much negligible.

As MasterPoker said, just use Ark42's FAQ, or check www.mariokartwiistats.com and make your decision from that.

Answer

Funky / Flame Runner
Baby Daisy / Bullet Bike
Daisy / Mach Bike

Or if you play on off road stages a lot (Shy Guy, Sherbet, etc), Toadette in the Magikruiser works.

It depends a lot on the situation. Number of players, distribution of tracks, range of skill levels, but there are some constants. The fastest two bikes, Spear and Sneakster/Nitrocycle, are too much of a hindrance on many tracks where their poor drifting can be exposed (though the latter is a decent choice for Automatic).

Then comes Flame Runner/Bowser Bike, Mach Bike, and Bullet Bike. All are extremely easy to steer and very fast as well. Their flaw is poor acceleration, but that is easily trumped by a better top speed, the speed you will be at most of the time. Use the standing mini-turbo technique already mentioned to recover from a hit while in the Flame Runner or Mach Bike.

Also, though they are somewhat slower, there are points in favor of Dolphin Dasher and Magikruiser. They are significantly slower, but far stronger in the areas of acceleration and off-road. The steering remains excellent, and the ability to do mini-turbos while in grass and most other off-road areas allows for some useful shortcuts without using an item.

Characters...well, it is hard to make a brief reply for them. The best advice I can give, besides telling you to read my FAQ or Ark42's FAQ, is to pick characters that give both a Speed bonus and a bonus to at least one other desirable stat.

It wasn't quite as blatant obvious at the time I made my first post on the matter, but as people have played more and abused standing mini-turbos to the fullest, it has become obvious - Flame Runner/Bowser Bike is best, and nothing else comes close.

Character selection matters a lot. Use one of the "big 3" mentioned above and use a character that gives a bonus to speed. If you don't you are likely to lose because the ones that do will usually cut you off from the item boxes at the start of races and you will lose. Speed = chances of getting the items first. This _also_ applies to battle mode. You don't want to trail behind because you can't get coins first, either. Weight class is tougher to choose as it's all a gamble on how often you get hit.
