Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
Review by metralo
"Well, this is surprising. A GOOD movie game!"
Wow. Honestly, that's all I have to say about this game. It's different I suppose. Normally, movie base games suck hard, and one would think this would be no exception. Prepare to be surprised
The graphics are eh. Very eh. Looks like it could be done on a PS2, or Game Cube easily. They could have done a much better job with the Wii. I understand they just want to get it out by launch so people will buy it regardless. Though this looks sad.
The sound seems pretty well. I love Scrat's little sounds he makes when he attacks. The characters sound just like the movie counter parts, if not a little off. The over world sound though isn't too shabby. Most of it is ok, but some of it seems like there is no excuse to not have sounds that could have sounded at least somewhat like the movies. Scrat's sounds and voice acting saves it though.
The game controls very similar to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. You shake the Wii-mote to have scrat attack, and do other things, like climb walls, slide on ice, or dig things up. You can also hold down Z to aim rocks at enemies and B to shoot them. The C button is for sniffing. Then there's the general movement with the nun-chuck that I'm sure you've all heard. So this game does it better then some other games do.
Now here's where it gets fun. (Or when you start playing) First off, they throw you out on an iceberg while you are chasing after your nut. They give you the basic controls through signposts there. That'll go on through most of the game. Once you've nailed everything down (jumping, attacking, climbing, and sniffing) they throw a mini-game at you. It's rather fun. To start it off, you start to walk into a cave, when a saber tooth stops you. He pretty much says that he doesn't want you around, and to get lost before he finishes his nap he will take. You being the rebel you are, don't care, and go and get the acorns. While you are sneaking around, he looks back every so often. Wasn't he supposed to be taking a nap? Anyways, every time he looks back, you have to quickly press a button to lie down. Once you finish that, he walks off, as if he isn't tired. Soon after you collect more acorns, and get through the levels, you get to play another mini-game! This one is rather fun, and I would like to go back to. You slide down an ice slope, and dodging things as you go. The main goal is to get 7000 points by collecting acorns to impress the ladies. What they really need to do before mini-games though, is explain them. At the start you get going then hit a stop. Well at first you would assume to just. you know, jump, but know they make you do some DDR type stuff while you fly through the air. So they just throw arrows at you. Doesn't sound bad right? Well here's what's bad: You do it with the Wii-mote. Now that doesn't sound that bad I guess, but when you are controlling the sliding with the nun-chuck, don't you think they would have you do it with the nun-chuck as well? Once you get the hang of it though, it's fun, and easy. One thing I should add, if you collect more then 1000 acorns during a single level, you get a bonus stage which I still haven't found out how to get to.
I don't think you would replay this much, but I honestly think it's worth a rent at least for the platforming and mini-games. It's all lots of fun. I know I would replay it just for the mini-games
