Wii Sports

Review by brustison

"The best tech demo EVER!"

These 5 sports are all fun to play and if you take the time trying to win training medals and get pro on every sport, this game will be rewarding by itself.

Add the element of multiplayer to every event and the fact that almost everyone who tries out Wii Sports is drawn to it again and again and you have one fantastic game that brings so many people together.

Create a Mii and play as your Mii in every event. And I'm not kidding when I tell you that this game will bring nongamers in. I have seen it happen too many times to refute this claim.

I give the rating a 9 only because sometimes the controls are a little screwy and when you reach really high levels above pro, the AI can do some pretty nasty things to you. Also, they should have had more statistics for each individual Mii that plays this game.

In my opinion, bowling is the closest to being truly realistic. Tennis is next and Golf is third, but the putting is screwy & difficult to control. Baseball & Boxing both need work in exact movements, but if you spend the time to get acquainted with how to use the controls, you will find all the games equally rewarding.

Now GIVE US WII SPORTS 2 ONLINE! Wii Sports is not an online game and it's ashame. Oh, and hardly anything changes when you go pro, which is 1000 points, yet most people strive for the pro level.

After hundreds and hundreds of bowling games, the highest score around these parts is 263, with 258 & 257 being the next highest. After awhile, you will play "the champ" in all sports except bowling & golf. Once you beat the champ, a message is sent to your Wii Message board. Messages are also sent when you go pro or when you receive a medal in the training mode or when you get a new high score.

Of all the games, I thought golf cheated the most by a long shot, with baseball second, tennis & boxing third & bowling the most accurate. The AI will make you lose sometimes when you get a very high skill level. This is disappointing if you long for better players than their "champs" have to offer and shows that they could have spent MUCH more time with the AI of the game. Golf will flat out hose you, so don't always trust the wind, EVEN if it's over 20MPH, over water or near other hazards. And putting has driven many of my friends and family mad.

I am, by nature, a very critical person, so don't let these things scare you away. You got it for free anyway, why not spend a couple hours with the game and see if you can figure it out. The graphics won't wow you, but they are pretty darn good if you look closely enough.

Overall, I do think this is one of the best games Nintendo has ever made, even if it doesn't feel like a full game all the time. If Nintendo is smart, they would release individual versions of ALL the Wii Sports games with expanded features and online play. Believe me, after seeing how much people like this game, this idea would not fail.

Let's take a look at the training and fitness mode. Training mode has 15 different exercises and you can earn bronze, silver, gold or platinum. Several of these exercises are quite difficult, but essential components to becoming excellent at any of the sports. I have earned some golds and have medalled in every event, but I have not received ONE platinum medal. It is extremely difficult to attain a platinum medal. There are amounts posted online as to how many you need for each medal, if you are interested.

You unlock the training modes by playing them, and once you unlock a training exercise, you will be able to do that exercise with your Mii when you do your daily fitness training.

Daily fitness training consists of three events that are randomly given to you each day. The better you do, the lower your score. The lowest score you can acheive is 20. I've only gotten this score once in 30 tries. It's not easy. They keep track on a graphed chart, but do not show your total average fitness age. Even though the fitness age is more about how good you did rather than how physically fit you are, this is an activity that has kept me going back to Wii Sports over and over.

In conclusion, Wii Sports will give you much enjoyment, convert nongamers and maybe, just maybe help some of the hardcore guys realize that gaming is supposed to be FUN first and foremost. If you are just starting, either tennis or bowling is a great way to show someone how to use the Wiimote and can get them more comfortable before trying boxing, the only game that requires a nunchuk. Great games offer lots of enjoyment, but there is always room for improvement, even in the best games ever made, and Nintendo could really capitalize on Wii Sports success with expanding the games and developing new sports for us to play.

Wii Sports has made me and many other happy people!
