WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Review by metralo

"Great game with few flaws."

Wario, the king of mini-games. I don't exactly understand why his games are always mini-game collections, but that shouldn't matter to my review. This game is still the ultimate party game on the Wii. Maybe even the ultimate party game in general. What do I think about it?

Why do I even bother to touch on the graphics? Basically, during the game, it's colorful and in 2D. Most of the mini-games are 2D as well. That doesn't mean there is no 3D goodness in here though. Some of the games, like sharpening your pencil, or floating the Wind Waker Link to an island are 3D, in their classic system graphics no less. That's pretty much the extent of the games graphics. The Mii's show up a few times as well, but that's about it.

Well, the sound is just a bunch of random stuff thrown together. First you have a song playing, then you get a new song playing as you play other mini-games. Mostly the music is just plain bad, but it fits what it's trying to do…which is whatever it wants to do. It does have some pretty rockin' tunes, so of which you can actually conduct. I'll get into the conducting later though, as it is a game play issue. Also, the narrator for the new ways to control…awesomeness. It's like Bob Ross, except he has a lower voice.

Well, the controls are a given. As you progress, you get new ways to control. My favorites are, The Big Cheese, The Janitor, and the Mohawk. All of those are great examples for showing off what the Wii can do. With The Big Cheese, you put the Wiimote near your waist, like you would put a hula hoop. Surprisingly enough, one of the games that use this control function has to do with hula hooping. With The Janitor, you hold it like it's a broom. One game that uses this function is vacuuming up leaves, until the ground is clear. Neat, huh? Lastly, the Mohawk. It's kind of self explanatory, you just hold the Wiimote on top of your head like you have a Mohawk. I enjoy the jump rope games, and the squatting games that use this position. There are my 3 favorite stances. I think there's a total of 14, but I may be off by one or two. Now, one thing I haven't explained is the Nunchuck attachment. They have they're own mini-games in which you use the nunchuck and the Wiimote to do various things. The only thing that's bad about all of this; it sucks. It works fine and all, but it's the mini-games that suck, and I'll get into that later.

The story is pretty out there. Mainly, Wario finds a tomb and at the end, he finds a little something called the “Form Baton” Now, to make the game even better, once Wario picks up the “Form Baton”, a rock falls down. Like Indiana Jones. How awesome is that. Really freakin' awesome. So every little section thing is a burst of mini-games and a short little story thing, such as breaking a Game & Watch, having a giant monster attack the building, or catching “feline fever” and dancing with cats or dogs. So the story varies, and that's good.

Now, the Mini-games, what we have all been waiting for. The mini-games are quite good actually. They're very short however, but that's what's intended. Games range from picking nose hair to pulling out the Master Sword in OoT. Some are fun, while some aren't. My most note worthy ones would have to be dancing, and the Star Fox Mini-game. The dancing one could become a full fledged game, and the Star Fox game gives a great feel to how the Star Fox games could be in the near future. Now that I have discussed those items, it's time to discuss the “balance stone”.

The “balance stone” is essentially the Nunchuck attachment found by some alien. I have one thing and one thing only to say about this item; it's trash. The games that utilize it aren't even fun. They're more like, “Hey do some hard thing that doesn't work too well and if you don't pass it…try again lololol” When you normally try to do something, you either have no clue what you're trying to do, whether it's lead some guy to the finish or fix the time. Plus the vague explanations of the stances are awkward too. Stance A, B, and C. You can hardly see where to put them in order to do the games right. There is one good thing though. Some of the games are fun. But I would stick to just the Wiimote. At least most games are good on that, and not just “some”.

Well, we got one thing left; multi-player. You don't get it until you beat the entire main story (you don't have to use the “balance stone” thank god) which I find kind of dumb. What's worse is the fact that all of the games aren't even there. Only the good ones. It would be nice if it had all of them though. There is also a dart game, which is kind of fun I guess, although it doesn't have cricket or anything. Just 301 and 501. So, the multi-player is good, and with friends this is probably the most fun you'll have on the Wii. I consider renting it if you're having a party, or buying it if you'll play it all of the time.
