Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII
Review by Wharuh
"A fun game with a few flaws. And it DOES have multiplayer."
Flying is fun. Shooting Nazis is fun. Flying around shooting Nazis is fun. So Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII must be fun, right? Well, sort of.
Gameplay: With the Wii's incredibly fun controller layout, this game scores pretty high on the "fun" bar. There are multiple controller layouts for you to choose, so if you're not comfortable using the Nunchuk to pitch and yaw your plane, you don't need to. There is also a nifty feature that allows the camera to follow your selected target so that you can get a better view of where it is. This, however, doesn't always work, as it gets rather confusing to turn your plane at the same time the camera is spinning all around trying to follow your target.
Graphics: The Wii has really never been known for it's graphical prowess, but this game truly shines. A lot. The developers really like the bloom effect. The plane models look stunning, and the explosions and other effects are beautiful.
Sound: Really nothing to say hear. Sound design is okay, and there are different machine gun and cannon noises as well, but other than that there's really nothing ground breaking here.
Replayability: There are a LOT of planes to unlock. Like, nearly 33 or so. Also, there is multiplayer, contrary to what certain other reviews may say, and it's pretty good. Not great, but good. Also, there are several coin-op style mini-games, which also allow you to unlock planes and upgrades.
Other: My one true problem with this game is the A.I. It's useless. Ground troops push forward RIGHT into artillery and tanks, and obviously, since you're an airplane, it's YOU'RE job to take out the ground enemies as well. You'll always find yourself babysitting ground troops, and when you're not doing that you're helping out your wingmen. Some missions are like trying to protect a baby as it crosses the street, meanwhile hundreds of cars are speeding across the road it needs to cross. Frustrating.
So basically, while this game does nothing wrong, it gets a few things right, so it's not that bad. It's a good start, and I personally hope to see another installment. Though, I think they pretty much used up all the planes ever made in WWII.
