Wii Play
Review by wolverinefan
"Average at best"
Wii Play is the 2nd game in Nintendo's "Wii" series of games. I had read some so-so reviews on the game and I really had no hopes for it being fun but borrowed it from a co-worker anyway. Is it worth picking up? Read on!
The graphics in the game are pretty basic but they are crisp and clean. I really dug the graphics in the shooting game. Was well done as are the others but it showed the most promise of them all.
Sound wise the game is alright. Sound effects are pretty basic and the game isn't something that would have many sound effects anyway. The music was alright but didn't really stick out to me.
Control in the game is done with the Wiimote. It's responsive in all of the games which so far are a rare thing. On the other hand, it's a little too sensitive on a few of the games.
I'm not going to go in depth with each of the games. In the end the game just offers 8 or so mini games. A shooting game, a tank battle game, pool, fishing, table tennis, hockey and a few more that I just can't remember.
The better games I thought were shooting, pool and the tank one. The shooting one plays like Duck Hunt on the NES so it brings back some fond memories. I really liked how the mini game ends as well. The pool mini game was pretty solid as well and the controls worked great. I'm just not good at pool. As for the tank game it can use just the Wiimote or both controller parts. A little easier with both but manageable with just the Wiimote.
The fishing game would be fun but it looks like a kiddy pool and the 3d depth thing is a bit awkward to do. Table tennis is something I just didn't like. Not sure why. I found that the hockey one was a bit iffy with the twisting.
I know it doesn't seem like I have much to say about this game but there isn't much to it. You unlock each new game by finishing the one before it. You can win gold metals for getting high scores and that's it. It's limited in what it offers.
On one hand the game is $50 and not worth that price but then again it comes with a Wiimote. So depending on the gamer, it can be a deal or a rip-off. I wish Nintendo would start using on-line for these because it would make it more worth while. I don't see any friends wanting to play this over and over because it's rather simple and the mini games really don't offer much after a few tries. The game does work as a good tool for training with the Wiimote but really, should we have to pay for training games on how to use a controller?
