Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree
Review by Crossyboyo
"C +, Must try harder"
Big Brain Academy, WII Degree is a port of the popular series on the DS.
From your first day at WII University, you are tested in 5 categories (Analyse, Compute, Memorise, Identify & Visualise) to measure your IQ. Daily tests will develop these categories, as your scores increase your brain-weight (IQ) will rise too.
So, is it worth buying for the big screen?
Graphics: 7 (out of 10)
Nothing special, but they do exactly what you need. Graphics are bright and clear. This is not a game that will show off the power of the WII, but with respect, this really isn't the point of WII Degree.
Sounds: 7 (out of 10)
Again the sound it isn't the Symphony Orchestra, but the sound is well-delivered, especially the use of the WII-Remote to relay messages.
Gameplay: 8 (out of 10)
The game plays very much like WII Sports. The daily tests are extremely similar and the method of measurement is a more sophisticated version of that used in WII: Sports (with 5 categories instead of 3). Each game (3 games for each category makes 15 in total) can be played at either easy, normal or hard (with expert levels unlocked if gold or platinum scores are attained at all levels).
It is essentially WII Sports for the mind. If you like the simplicity of WII Sports you'll enjoy this. If you enjoy the daily routine of playing in short bursts and improving yourself tangibly you'll enjoy this too.
Longevity: 6 (out of 10)
This is where the game is flawed. 15 mini games, many of which are similar is simply not enough. Each game lasts just over a minute with the only incentive being to improve your score. Some games you just get (I am very much a compute man) and before you know it you'll be onto expert. Other games (memorise being my achilles heel) which you'll quickly tire of. I've had this game for 2 days and already the shelf-life is appearing.
However, the multiplayer (especially the sprint) is great fun. Whilst this game won't keep you enthralled for months, it still has legs for a post-pub thrash with your mates or as part of a daily routine. Between WII Sports and WII Degree, you can work out your brain and body in about 20 minutes. And who said computer games were bad for you?
In conclusion: If you like WII Sports and fancy a quick workout for your mind I'd recommend it, especially at only £20. However, those who are looking for a little depth, might be better served sticking to Dr Kawashima on the DS.
