de Blob
Review by imdawinner
"de Blob? More like de Boring."
de Blob. A game of color. A game of running around and painting a city, saving the residents from them gray INKT soldiers. The premise may seem fun but, it really only seems that way.
Gameplay 5/10
At first de Blob really is a fun game. The first level does a great job of explaining how to play although the controls could have been better. You have to pull up with the Wii Remote to jump, instead of the easier A or B button. The initial fun of the first few levels quickly wears off as the levels become repetitive fast. The game becomes just doing challenges and painting generic buildings to unlock the next area of the level, then unlocking the next stage. And the only difference between most stages is a few new enemies or a new way of transportation. It really becomes a bother to play after a while.
Story 3/10
The story is very bad and doesn't feel like a story at all. Basically, the color-hating INKTs come and make Chroma City grey, and you and the color underground have to stop it. And all that you can learn by watching the opening movie. There's not much else in the name of story, expect for small text sequences before you start a level. And even those barely progress what little of a story there is
Graphics/Sound 8/10
This is where the game stands out. Being a game focusing on color, de Blob really does look nice. The music is also very good, although it good be a little less cheery. The game good use a few more sharp edges, as most of the graphics are curvy. Aside from that, de Blob is great in this department.
Replay Value 5/10
The only reason to return to a level to complete all the challenges, most of which you'll probably already have done. Also, there are purple items to collect, and getting all of them changes the style of the buildings you'll never see again. The multiplayer mode actually provides some fun, though.
Final Recommendations 5/10
This game is barely good enough to rent, but definitely don't buy it. If you get it as a gift, you should plan on returning it unless you've it before and actually liked it. Don't get it as a gift unless someone asks for it. And only get if you're absolutely sure you want it.
