INTRODUCTION.
****************************************************************************
The surprisingly addictive Harry Potter game from Electronic Arts has an
optional sidequest of collecting 101 Famous Witches and Wizards Cards. The
Xbox version of the game has the same 101 cards as the other versions, but
they're in different locations. I played through the game twice through
looking for all the cards, but each time at the very end I found that I'd
missed some crucial card early on that I couldn't get later. (The first time
it was a Burrow card...and the second time I somehow walked right by the card
in the Avifors challenge - argh!) So I realized I needed a list of cards
sorted by their locations to save me from making future stupid mistakes. I
also was getting tired of tromping in and out of all the classrooms trying to
remember which classrooms still had cards in them - a list of cards organized
by locations would be helpful for that, too.
There are other FAQs that lists the cards by number, but I couldn't find one
that listed them by location, so I made I created this guide to help collect
all 101 cards efficiently, without missing any of the crucial ones that can't
be collected later.
I have NOT put the cards' names on this list because (1) they're already
available in several other FAQs, including Kathryn Mintram's Xbox walkthrough
and Su-Eun Yin's PS2 Wizard Card FAQ (the card names are the same in the PS2
and Xbox versions - only the locations differ). (2) I wanted this FAQ to be as
compact as possible for printing out, and adding the names caused lots of word
wrap-around and made the FAQ much longer to print, so I took the card names
out. Plus, it's more fun to be surprised by the silly names and descriptions!

PART 1. Cards you have only one chance to get!!
****************************************************************************
Make sure you get the following cards in the Burrow, Diagon Alley, Whomping
Willow, the Avifors Challenge and the Forbidden Forest as you go through those
areas, because you can't return later. Well, actually, three of these cards
are cards to be traded, which means you can buy an extra copy at Fred &
George's shop later. But the other 14 are unique cards and you have just ONE
chance to get them. These 14 have asterisks after their numbers.

Card# Location / how to get

The Burrow (4 cards; 3 are unique)
1* In the barn (after knocking the gnomes off the rafters).
3* In the barn (after knocking the gnomes off the rafters).
8* Beat Fred's de-gnoming score of 200.
59 In a chest in the garden, by the wall near the house. (Also in
       Greenhouse. Trade for #2.)

Diagon Alley (5 cards; 3 are unique)
98 In the attic of Borgin & Burkes, near the ladder. (Also 3rd floor
       of Hogwarts. Trade for #78.)
5* Move crate and push button to open gate by staircase.
27 Through barrel in Leaky Cauldron basement. (Also racing round 2, race 2.
       Trade for #23.)
28* By Ginny's brass scales in the back room of the Magical Menagerie.
32* Use Lumos to find secret room in Gambol & Japes, near entry door.

Whomping Willow (3 cards; all are unique)
4* After defeating first batch of imps and reaching the save scroll, stand
at the save scroll and look back at the log. You need to go up the
RIGHT side of the log to the upper area, then cross a log bridge and
       look for a chest.
6* This time go up the LEFT side of the log (when looking at it with the
save scroll behind you), zap the two puffapods, then shuffle across
the ledge that they were blocking.
7* Near the Wiggenweld stump. Stand with the stump at your back and look
across the open area. On the right is a ledge with an imp who is firing
at you. Further to the right is a smaller ledge. Flipendo the imp, then
jump to the smaller ledge to find another chest.

Avifors Challenge (1 unique card)
85* In the room with all the annoying little ledges that you have to jump
between. It's in the dark room underneath.

Forbidden Forest (4 cards; all are unique)
66* On your right in the first tunnel, behind the 1st piece of webbing.
62* After talking with Aragog (the big spider), follow the path and keep
looking on your left. The chest will be on your left, tucked between
       two ledges.
63* Up on a ledge in the area with lots of scary high cliffs around a
bottomless crevasse. You may see the chest up above before you can
get to it. Go past it, jump over the chasm to the other side, go
forward as far as you can, jump back, and climb up the steps.
64* An obvious chest in an open area just after burning the first piece of
webbing that you come to after the wall sneak.

****************************************************************************
PART 2. Cards you can get any time.
****************************************************************************
The following cards are scattered throughout Hogwarts, and you can pick them
up at any time, more or less. The "more or less" is because time of day
matters. Most of them cannot be found at night because the treasure chests
vanish at night, and you also can't play the mini-games at night either.
Conversely, Fred & George's shop is only open at night for most of the game,
but their shop will also open up on the last day after you've defeated the
Basilisk. The lost items can be found any time of the day or night.
Many of these cards are in chests that you'll need to open with a spell. The
name of the spell is listed after the card's location.

Famous Witches and Wizards card?" - with no card name - that's one of the

****************************************************************************
PART 3. Summary of traded cards.
(These are also listed above on the appropriate floor.)
****************************************************************************
These are cards you can only get by trading another card with a student. You
can always find two copies of the card that gets traded away, one to trade and
one to keep. Fred & George apparently have some kind of racket going on with
the other students, because as soon as you have traded a card away, it turns
up for sale at Fred & George's shop for 30 beans. So if you screw up somehow
in finding the other copy, you can always buy your original card back, but I
don't recommend this because it's impossible to tell which card you're buying.

Card Location of student, and where to get the card the student wants

2 Trade with a boy in red-trimmed robe in a trio of students on the 1st
floor, for #59. You can get #59 from the garden at the Burrow, and in
       second little greenhouse.
23 Trade with the walking blond kid on the 1st floor, for #27. You can get
#27 from the Leaky Cauldron's basement, and in broom racing round 2,
       race #2.
36 Trade with walking dark-haired kid on 1st floor for #84. You can get #84
from broom-racing round 4, race 2, and on the 1st floor (turn left,
then into the room straight ahead).
61 Trade with a walking boy with a blue-trimmed robe on the 4th floor, for
#77. #77 is on the 1st floor (turn left, then into room straight
ahead), & 2nd floor in Library Annex.
75 Trade with a girl with black pigtails in red-trimmed robe on the 4th
floor, for #13. You can get #13 from gnome-dunking round #2, or in the
girls' bathroom on the 2nd floor.
78 Trade with a black-haired girl in green-trimmed robe, with another
student, on the 4th floor, for #98. #98 is in the attic of Borgin &
Burkes, and on the 3rd floor, through left door.
81 Trade with blond girl on 7th floor, in the corner by the bookcase with
another girl, for #43. #43 is in the dungeon (get when you are
"Goyle'd") & under the bookshelf on the 4th floor.
94 Trade with the other girl in the same pair of students on the 7th floor,
       for #31. You can get #31 from broom-racing round 3, race #1, & the 6th
floor in the classroom straight ahead.

PART 5. A suggested strategy for efficient card-collecting.
****************************************************************************
The main idea is to first just play through the game to learn all your spells,
picking up only a few crucial cards along the way. Once all the spells are
learned, make a Big Card-Collecting Sweep through Hogwarts opening all the
chests and trading cards with students. Here's one way to do it (of course,
you can do it any way you like!)
  (1) As you play through the game make sure you get the 17 cards listed in
Part 1, in the areas that you can't return to later, ESPECIALLY the fourteen
unique cards.
  (2) Fred & George's: As soon as possible, get 20 beans to buy the 100-bean
bag. Then you can collect enough beans to play the mini-games each day, and
also you can collect 100 beans to buy the Alohomora spell book. Also buy Fred
& George's 5 unique cards at some point. (Don't buy cards that are not named
when Harry asks about them; those are ones that you traded away, and you
shouldn't need them to buy them back. You also shouldn't need to buy the stink
pellets and balloons, or their holders, unless you're really having trouble
with prefects.)
  (3) To get a full set of the eight cards you'll need for trading, pick up
card #77 in the locked chest in the Library Annex once you know Alohomora, and
get the two cards in the dungeon when you are "Goyle'd" (you only need one for
trading, #43, but why not get the other while you're there?). The other six
cards should show up without much effort: you should already have #59 from the
Burrow garden, #98 from the attic of Borgin & Burkes, and #27 from the Leaky
Cauldron, and you'll pick up the other three in the mini-games (#13 from
gnome-dunking round 2, #31 from broom race round 3, and #84 from broom race
round 4).
  (4) Make some progress on the lost items each day as you go up & down
through Hogwarts, or else you'll end up having to make lots of long trips for
each item at the end of the game. I like to get all but the last item (the
tarantula) before the last day.
  (5) Mini-Games: You can play each days' games as they appear, or wait till
the end and play them all at once. Collect beans and play the games in the
morning or the afternoon. But, don't collect beans in the morning and try to
save the beans for the afternoon, because you'll probably lose beans during
the adventures you'll have in class. Similarly don't try to carry beans
through the night.
  (6) The Big Card-Collecting Sweep! Finally, it's the last day. You've
defeated the Basilisk, you know all the spells, you've found all the lost
items except the tarantula, you've played all the mini-games, and you have the
eight cards you need for trading. Work your way through Hogwarts bottom to
top, opening chests and trading cards with students. When you're in the
Library, also get the lost tarantula from behind the Wiggenweld cauldron, and
return it to the notice board on the 7th floor.
  (7) You should now have 100 cards. Go talk to Albus Dumbledore in the main
entrance hall to get your last card. Bask in the glory of the last card, then
go enjoy the House Cup ceremony. :-)

Part 5. Where to get Bertie Botts' Every Flavor Beans
******************************************************************************
You'll need plenty of beans to buy the 100-bean bag and the five cards from
Fred & George's shop, and to play the mini-games. If you're blowing all your
beans at unsuccessful mini-games, try saving your game (with lots of beans) in
the main entry hall, then play the games, and if you lose, just quit and
restart (and thank the programmers for giving us such fast quit-and-restart
time!)
You can get lots of beans on the 2nd floor (especially in the "Room of the
10-bean chests" in the dungeon-y area - through the 2nd door on the left, then
the next door on the right) and the 3rd floor (there are four 5-bean ornaments
in the curved hallway, and several more ornaments in the Dark Arts classroom).
But my favorite way to get beans is by flying around the castle on the Nimbus
2000, looking for rings to fly through. The rings are few and far apart, so it
takes a while, but it's just more fun than hiking up and down the Grand
Staircase for the umpteenth time. Flying through a yellow ring gives you 1
bean, red is worth 2, green is 5. and a lucky blue ring gives you 10 beans.

Part 6. Credits, thanks, etc.
******************************************************************
Thanks first to my wonderful boyfriend Jerry who gave me this game for my
birthday and then put up with my total addiction to Famous Witches & Wizards
card-collecting for the next three weeks. Thanks also to Electronic Arts for
a clever and fun game, so much better than most movie-tie-in games. (Special
kudos for the quick re-load times, unlimited lives, and wonderful broom-
flying. But please let us skip the cut-scenes next time!) Thanks to
J.K.Rowling for her brilliant idea of combining the classic old British
boarding-school book series (anyone else remember Mallory Towers?) with the
Magic University concept common in the fantasy genre, and pulling it all off
with fresh, funny, engaging writing, and, not least, for demanding high
quality in all the movie and game spin-offs.
