You do objectives and you go to talk to the person who gave you that objective e.g the Governor.

Well in the early goings the escort missions are your best option (it was for me at least never really got into the whole commodity trade thing in this game) You can make about 1500-3000 per run, do yourself a favor and bump up your commerce skill it will help. When you get the chance buy yourself a second ship, (a Barque is the best bet for cargo runs if I remember right, don't remember the name exactly but the ship's price was about 18000 and had a lot of cargo room) this is when cargo runs start paying a LOT more coin.

With your starter ship and your new ship you'll start making about 5-8500 per run and once you have 4 ships you can almost make as much as 80-100 000 per run! (even more when you start getting into the even bigger and better ships with 4 battleships I was making 200g +) After building up some dough and firepower you can go around ransacking other ships (if you can leave and empty slot in your fleet so you can keep one ship from your plundering and sell it at the ship yard later) Failing all of this check out the cheat tab for this game there's a couple of easy tricks for quick dough (and they work Ive tried em)
