Question from MegaMetroidFan9

My Xbox is having a hard time reading discs. Help?

Almost every time I try start a game, I'll get an error that says "There is a problem with the disc you are using. It may be dirty or damaged," and the game won't start. On the rare occasion that the game DOES start, the framerate is extremely erratic and the sound occasionally cuts out on some games, and then stops and gives me the dirty or damaged disc error (usually during a between-area load time). I know it's not my discs, since I've used around 10 different games that all give me the same error at the same times. What could be my problem and how can I fix it?

You can buy a new DVD drive from ebay or somewhere. Use torx screwdrivers to open the Xbox and replace the drive simply by unclipping the ribbon of old one and clipping in the ribbon in the new one. It's a piece of cake.

You probly have a frist make with the crap drive I have that one too and had the same problem I was able to fix it in 2 ways.

1. what was aculty wrong with it A dog or cat har was couught on the under side of my dvd lens internal problrm removed it and cleaned the lens that fixed it. You have to take apart your dvd drive for this to work.

2. Found a dead Xbox in trash with better dvd drive that works newer drive was compatable with older system. You only have to unplug your wires for this fix.

This is most likely a pooched DVD drive. What I would suggest initially is to:

1) Use a lens cleaner and see if that helps
2) Clean the DVD manually. I'm sure that there's an FAQ out there to help.
3) If #2 seems too much work, replace the DVD drive. It's simple plug and play and all you need to do this is a torx screwdriver to remove the 5 screws. No IQ necessary. This transfer is very simple.

The cheap and easy start is to use a DVD cleaner disc to try to clean the disc drive lense. Other than that I could be a damaged or mis-aligned laser in the drive that is VERY tricky to fix. If the cleaner disc won't work just swap out the drive.

Here is a tip for scratches on DVDs, games and CDs. Go to Wal-Mart and buy a bottle of Pledge Multi Surface. It has to be a spray bottle. Spray the disc and let it stand for approx. 2-3 mins. wipe clean with a soft cloth. The oil in the spray fills the scratches and you shouldn't have any problems due to the scratches for a good long time.
